I guess you're not going to watch the CBS sitcom he's been making these days.

FWIW I agree that he isn't good on camera. First of all, he has a face for radio (yyewwghhh), and secondly he can't act as well as people think. I saw that movie The Hammer he did where he's a boxing instructor and the acting was super amateur.

What if they charged .10 an episode but you had to buy em in multiples of 10? Like a 10 Adam Corolla podcasts gift certificate if you will.

It's a hassle and a mistake to charge for any form of what is essentially radio.

I think his best bet is asking for donations, and maybe giving out stuff at different donation levels. Like an Adam Carolla pint glass for 50$, bumper stickers for 10$, etc.

advertisers are his best bet imo. Replace your godawful intro and put in a 60sec ad.

He has expressed concerns that advertisers would censor what he says, at least a little bit.

Then don't take that advertiser. There's like a zillion companies that want to target his demo and are happy to be seen as a little "edgy".

I don't know anything about it.. in theory I agree with you. He has just said that he feels advertisers, in general, would not let him do things as he wants to.

I think its the best solution, personally.. and feel that there has to be some company that doesn't care what he does. I was just relating what he said.

A few random things:

What do you guys think about the long term prospects of his show? Will he still have time to do 5 podcasts a week while he's also writing and acting in 22 television episodes a year?

I just listened to yesterday's podcast and he was talking with Jason Calacanis about advertising vs subscriptions which wouldn't start until next year so he's definitely planning on doing this long term.

CBS has to be pretty happy about the popularity of his podcast which will definitely translate to higher ratings. I probably wouldn't be interested if not for his podcast.

So long as I only needed to pay in one lump sum I would instantly pay. If I needed to pay like $500 at the beginning of the year to get a year long subscription I would prob do it. Ofc others wouldn't but I also doubt that he would charge that much.

This Week In Tech does 2-3 ads per show and it's quite unobtrusive. Seems like the way to go. It's Leo reading the spots, which I think is better than a regular pre-recorded ad.

Agree here too.. as long as it wasn't like.. pay once a week. I'm way too lazy for that.

I think he could make it 1 cent an episode and he'd lose close to 50% of his fanbase. Not cuz the $$$ obviously, cuz ppl are lazy to set up online payment.

Ads that he reads are the way to go imo.

Whoever this Jimmy Pardo dude is needs to never come on again. How does this guy run his own successful podcast? His entire routine is quickly coming up with relative responses to adam. He brought absolutely nothing to the table other than filling in pauses and making a few rants go smoother.

Harland Williams was surprisingly good. Definitely agree with the poster that he had some very good interjected random one-liners. Had me lol'ing a few times, "don't count your stars before they've twinkled" - definitely something he just rambled and put together mid-sentence.

Jason Calacanis has been the most dominating guest sofar by far. Adam never got going at all, and I'd wager that Jason talked > 50% of the time, which is unheard of. He was pretty interesting, but a little too wannabe alpha-male nerd type to handle at times.

Yeah Pardo is the first one I haven't liked at all and I can safely say I will not be spending $20 for 25 of his podcasts or whatever jackass price he's charging.

I think Pardo tried to go into sidekick mode. Notice he tried to play the straight man for some of the bits, like Bald Brian or teresa would have.

I was really looking forward to the Harland Williams one but just didn't find him enjoyable to listen to. After 10 mins or so most of his one liners were more annoying than funny i thought. After the 23948230948rd time he told Adam to calm down during one of his rants i wanted to punch him in the throat.

The Bobcat one was good i thought.

obv Adam shouldn't try and make people pay for the podcasts but it sounds like he's so paranoid about the advertisers censoring him he's set on it right now. Good thing is he won't have to decide til the end of the year so maybe after 1000 other people say it's a bad idea he'll change his mind.

The subscription model has been shown to be a dead end again and again and again. It only works for porn (and poker coaching sites). I guess if your expectation is a hundred subscribers or whatever Pardo has, it's fine. But I expect Carolla is looking for a slightly larger audience. We're basically down to reinventing the wheel here.

He's not really that controversial. Yeah, a lot of the funnier bits of the podcast are pretty Blue and he goes on about the Mexicans too much. But he's not exactly Don Imus either. I actually think there's some Ego there - He likes the idea that he's too far out there, too much of a rebel for advertisers. So rather than find out he's not, he might just skip even trying to get advertisers and head straight for subscriptions.

Adam is on Bill Simmons' podcast today talking movies.

I just finished listening to the Danica Patrick one from Friday and it was pretty good. I'm sure Danica wasn't used to the interviewer talking about himself and going on rants rather than asking her questions. It was kinda strange that they took questions from callers but the 2nd one was great. Adam never gave her a chance to answer.

Looking forward to listening to today's podcast with Mike Tyson.

If he ever gets Norm MacDonald on, and Norm talks about having anal sex with his best friend's wife while his best friend is mowing the lawn, itunes may explode. It would actually be a good move to have Norm on as his first guest with a subscription fee...

I actually like Harland William's little comments while Adam was ranting. Adam's ranting about the fat guys getting weighed with no shirt on and calling the fat flab over the groin area a "panis," Harland's deadpan "oh thats what they call that" had me loling for quite a bit.

The one w/ Jamie Kennedy is the worst I've listened to yet. Jamie was very annoying with a very annoying voice, I got the impression he was a 13 yr old kid or something listening to it. Googled him and was wrong.

Yeah, and it's pretty damn effective because it's basically embedded ads, and whenever Leo does a commercial, that sponsor becomes the subject of the podcast for the next five minutes.

Hopefully Carolla doesn't try to go the paid subscription route, because even charging .05 per show will kill his audience. It's not so much the money, it's the hassle of having to go through the process of paying.
