I'd like to stay at $300ish if possible, but not sure of my choices these days.
My 5x crapped out on me a few weeks ago out of warranty, and they sent me a refurbished one for free.

Yes I bought it through Google.

If they didn't replace it, I was going to get a OnePlus 3t. The OnePlus 5 is coming out soon so depending on price and stuff I might get one and sell my 5x.

Ugh. That doesn't sound good. If it was the last 10-20% I would say it's a calibration issue but not 40%.

You can view the battery usage to see what has been using power, and you might have pre installed apps running in the background that you don't want or need. The ones that you can't uninstall you can disable.

And if you have bluetooth on but it can't find anything to connect to it will sap power.

Checking it just now, it's more like 30% when it drops off a cliff

But those type of issues would affect all the battery life. Not just the last 1/3...

If it's a week old, just straight up request a new device. Best case it's just a problem with battery calibration, but don't think it's worth the hassle to make sure.

Sounds like a dying battery. To confirm it is not an app, google how to boot your phone in safe mode and run it that way once the battery gets below 50%. If the discharge is the same, it is a bad battery. If it greatly improves the battery life, some app is causing it.

Pretty sure android does that automatically.

I love my oneplus 3, awesome phone.

You have to make sure everything is synced with your Google account

Super grunching, apologies.

Just got a pixel XL and got on project fi after my verizon/apple contract was up. Never had an android before, anyone got some must haves? I have nova launcher currently but haven't done much with it so far otherwise.

My contract with my Galaxy S6edge is up. Worth waiting for the Pixel 2? Any idea when that might come out? I've seen some rumors about the specs but can't find any sort of timeframe. If it's not gonna be for another 6+ months then I might just get the Pixel XL now.

There's probably no "must" haves... but I can definitely give you some common recommendations.

I have the regular Pixel and this is actually the first phone that I have NOT installed Nova on - but Nova would definitely be the go to rec for a different launcher.

I prefer Textra > Android Mesages mostly for some very minor customization stuff, black/AMOLED theme, etc. I expect I'll be switching back to Messages when RCS becomes a thing.

SwiftKey is a popular recommendation over the Google keyboard, but I prefer the Google one these days. The delete and cursor gestures are awesome, and it looks nice after the most recent update. I found the auto completion to be the same (AFTER giving each at least a good month of training).

I use Tapatalk for 2p2 and Reddit is Fun for reddit. I think the official FB app is totally fine and the best. Some complain about battery drain, you can use Tinfoil or Metal or any of the other webpage skins, they're mostly the same IMO.

I generally like all the other stock Google stuff. Calendar, Photos, Keep all fantastic. Not much else to say I guess. Just a beautifully smooth and great phone overall.

Whether it's "worth" it or not is subjective, but I personally think that it's worth the wait. Yes, it probably won't come out until at least October, and given how much of a **** show getting the Pixel was you may not get it for another couple months after that. However, the Pixel was a very rushed development, and although I absolutely love it, it makes me really hopeful for what they do with the Pixel 2. They will likely fix some major complaints that were probably likely due to not having enough time - like the lack of waterproofing and a better thinner-bezel design.

It's funny, after typing that last post, it makes me realize how my love for Android phones (and why I prefer it to iPhones) has changed over the years.

Probably 4-5 years ago I was much more hardcore into the customization side of things. Nova launcher was a must, making weird grid sizes and crazy home screens, and finding ways to automate anything I could with Tasker. And the the occasional rooting and custom ROMing here and there. In this phase, I vastly preferred Android to iOS for the freedom and customization.

My evolution has led me to care less and less about these things (still do a little bit of customization, but not much), and appreciate how Android has evolved with its smoothness, usability, and navigation. The Pixel phone is basically as smooth as the newest iPhones, and smoothness is one reason I put a custom ROM on my Galaxy S5 a few years ago. Additionally, I think Android has made leaps and bounds in terms of just basic phone usability. The whole feel of the notification shade - swiping down, swiping left and right to do things with notifications, the navigation bar with it's back button, double clicking the square to "alt tab" to your 2nd most recent app... etc. etc. Just a beautiful experience.

When I used an iPhone recently (before getting my Pixel) I was a bit impressed with the smoothness, but the OS UI just felt so much more clunky to use. Managing notifications was just garbage, reaching up to the top of the phone to find the app-specific back button... ugh. In this phase Android just behaves the way I want my phone OS to behave.

gobbo,

As with Saw, the Pixel is the first phone I haven't used Nova/other on instead of stock android. I similarly switched from SwiftKey back to Google Keyboard and have been very happy.

My most used stuff is definitely Google stuff: Keep, hangouts, chrome, gmail, camera, photos, calendar, weather. I only recently set up pay by phone stuff with Android Pay, and have been loving that more than is reasonable. I like Snapseed, Google Music, and Stitcher. Most everything else I use a ton is pretty person specific - Nest, banking, Slack, etc. I haven't played around with any of the password manager things for phones. I never became an Evernote person. Oh, and I use the google assistant basically all the time - location specific reminders are amazing and I can't imagine what life was like before them. (OK google, remind me to send that letter to x when I get home. OK google, Remind me to ask the vet about x when I'm next at <vet name here>. OK google, remind me to try <cocktail x> when I'm next at <bar x>" etc.

I use LastPass because it went free a little while ago and has all the features I want (Chrome extension with autocompletes there, fingerprint enabled).

This is actually an area where the beautiful flow of Android shines. When I encounter a password login thing, my flow is: home button -> dock arrow long press -> type "l" -> click last pass -> copy thingy -> double tap sqaure -> paste thingy. (I acknowledge it would be faster if my password manager was on a home screen, but I like the idea of this type of app somewhat not immediately visible... + with the arrow long press thing it's easy enough to get to)

(pro tip for those who don't know, long pressing the arrow above the dock brings you to the app search with the keyboard active immediately)

I love that I can think I have android all figured out and then learn awesome tricks like this. Thanks, didn't know this one

+1 to no longer having a custom launcher anymore now that I have the Pixel
I also use an app called Power Toggles to do my grid-ing - I prefer the sleeker look with the smaller icons. You can also set up setting toggles, though that's largely redundant with the notification pull down.
Also, the live earth wallpaper is really cool, though that novelty has worn off a bit after 6 months
And another also, I use a browser shortcut for Facebook instead of the actual Facebook app. Same functionality with less battery drain and I get to avoid having to download their Messenger app.

I'm confused and this might be a dumb question: Are you able to read FB messages though? I deleted the app long ago but caved and downloaded Messenger because the unknown messages were driving me nuts.

Yup, I just switch the browser to desktop mode, take care of the messages, and then switch back. I don't message that often (maybe send/receive 1/week avg) so the extra couple taps it takes to get to them isn't a big deal. I find it far superior to either of their ****ty apps, though it's been almost a year since I used either one. Ymmv

No not *all* app data is saved. e.g. game saves, minecraft worlds etc are not saved and restored.
