A girl who was dating a drug dealer / gang member was kidnapped and abused a few months back. Saying I feel less bad for her having gone though that experience than an accountant's GF is perfectly normal. That doesn't mean I think she deserved what happened to her or that it was her fault but there is at least some level of assumption of risk at play here which makes her situation different than someone who was a total ransom.

keep an opened mind, and maybe show a little sympathy imo.

The victim had a very extensive online presence of his own. This wasn't like a lonely guy met someone on a internet dating site and then got killed. The victim had a completely secret life online and there are hundreds of pictures of himself online. To avoid the type of criticism I am receiving here that aspect of the story has not really been discussed much but if someone is interested I can probably did up his online persona's name.
Further, I didn't say I don't have feel bad-- I obviously do-- but I rather was just trying to explain why people feel worse for kittens than humans sometimes. It is exactly the same as why people feel bad for young children more than they do for adults -- there is a difference in the degree of agency and ability to defend oneself.

CTV's 24 hour news channel had some french reporter on yesterday. The channel loops the news every hour so I heard it at least three times.

I doubt that. The phone led the police to the east side of Paris. They raided some undisclosed building-- presumably a hotel-- and found his personal possessions. If it is a decoy that is pretty elaborate and it comes at the cost of giving up at least some of his personal possessions.
