They're different...one takes you through the thought process at (mostly) a high level from the start to finish of a tournament and the other has detailed analysis of individual hands from a range of tournaments by a few different players.

I wouldn't even know what 'better' means when comparing two different books.

I just like them both...

Better meaning which book would be rated with a higher grade from a review. I just want to buy one or the other. Thanks

I'd go with 'Winning Poker Tournaments...' then. It just has a lot more analysis, three different perspectives on playing, and uses example from tournaments that are (I assume) a lot more like the ones most of us play than Aussie Millions.

I have read some of the book at barnes and nobles. This is the closest to online tourneys play as your going to get. There thoughts seem to match mines in alot of situations. Since im mostly an online tourney player this book fits me better then any other tournament book. PTF1 is second.

I picked up this book during my last trip to Vegas and only started reading it last week.

I am almost done with the first section by PearlJammer.

My opinion so far is that this book is awesome!

I've been waiting for a book like this for a long time - hand studies with the thinking process of a pro player. Not since Roy Cooke's The Play of Hands book have I seen such great explanations on how a hand is being played.

Even though this book is based on online tournament play, the thinking process can easily be applied to both live tournament and cash games.

This book is well worth it and definitely one of the better poker books out in the last while.

Matt Hilger - if you are reading this, thank you for putting this together!

It's excellent imo and I'd love to see more books of this type by players of this quality. It's like reading 2p2 threads without the rubbish advice.

I'd love this kind of book by someone who plays and beats the kind of low-stakes tourneys that I play. Yeah, I know they're simple if you're good, but...

Actually, we expect Volume II in early 2009. Matthew

As a low-level player, what I'm finding really valuable in this book is guidance on issues such as when to fold and when to keep the pot small. These are some of the most frustrating issues for players like me who are trying to learn good judgment at the table.

I believe I'd make many of these decisions correctly if I had a few minutes to think about them at the table, but I don't. I can train myself better to do this by following the thought processes in this book. In this sense, WPTOHAAT is better for me than an exposition of these principles in a book such as HOH, as much as I love that book.

I'm enjoying this book immensely.

Hi Matthew,

I can't wait for Volume II. Vol. I is one of my favorite poker books. Besides the content, I think Vol. I is one of the best formatted books I've ever read. It's very easy to follow, and all of the writers wrote clearly, and went into great detail about each of their moves.

I am currently rereading the book as we speak. My strategy usually involves reading a book straight through, somewhat quickly, and than rereading it again, but allowing more time to go over certain topics.

But like I said before, I very excited about Vol. II. Vol. I has helped my game out a great deal.

Here's an ideal. Perhaps you could get Rizen, Ape, or PearlJammer to each release their own versions of "Every Hand Revealed", based on a tournament they've won or went deep in.

I agree that the book is nicely designed, and also proofread quite well based on the part I've read so far.

Here's a rather fuzzy idea: I wonder if it would be possible to index the book based on concepts. E.g., playing AK in early stages, basing play on type of opponent, etc. This might not be workable, but thought I'd shoot the idea out there.

I have read many poker books and they all discuss pokerstrategies in more or less detail. That is good to get general concepts but I felt, and maybe I am thick, but it does not help me in specific situations.

This book is exactly what i have been waiting for, it gives so many helpful advice about to play against strong and weak position, bluff, oop etc etc, I can't wait for volume two and I hope it wouldn't be heads up.

I am also thick. I believe the difference is that other books, to varying degrees, present conceptual information, which is good, but I seem to be thinking at a lower level still, and the scenarios presented in this book tell me what I need to know in a more concrete situation. The goal, of course, is to use this to attain a more conceptual level of thought.

Does the starting stacks of players at the hands include blinds and antes?so we have to discount the Blinds amount from the initial stack?

PJ's section is a dog crap!

Does this guy know what SPR means? Shocked about how MTT variance can make suckers like this millonaires.

Ryzen's one is pretty good and Apestyles's one is awesome!

PearlJammer's section is the best imo, followed closely by Apestyles'. He really understands the concept of tournament factor, the big difference between ring games and tourneys. A MTT is a marathon, not a rush, you gotta build your image, exploit it, shuffle and repeat. A couple of million $ in online winnings can hardly be blamed on variance :P

Much obliged.

googled the book and found this thread so sorry about the bump. im just curious if anyone knows who some of the high stakes regulars are that are talked about in the book? all ive read so far (and i only have volume II for the record, just saw it in a barnes and noble and picked it up) is turner's section showing his play from 25 (27 cashed) down to winning a $100+R for ~$22K.

Also, is buying volumes I and III worth it? And how much should I pay for them? Thanks in advance.
