The Theory of Poker...

I have a very simple question. In The Theory of Poker he mentions some terms that I don't understand: Pat Hands and Come Hands

Can someone help me to understand them?

A PAT hand is basically like flopping the ultimate nuts in draw poker. One that you do not need to draw with. For example a PAT hand in 2-7 lowball would be 2,3,4,5,7 all rainbow.

A COME hand is a hand that you are drawing to a made hand. For example a COME hand in Stud would be something like Jh, 9h, 10h to start.

In games where you draw cards eg draw poker, triple draw lowball etc a pat hand is a hand that does not need any cards so does not "draw" ie take cards.

In triple draw lowball, a weak pat hand on the final draw is 97542. If your opponent draws or is likely to draw you "play it pat" or "pat". However, it is NOT the nuts. It is a weak pat hand hand. Pat hands can be weak as well as strong depending upon the game and/or situation.

A come hand needs extra cards eg a four flush or four straight regardless of the game being played.

In games without a draw what would be pat hands are known as "made" hands. In games without a draw come hands are known as "draws".

I always thought it was kinda funny they called drawing hands "come" hands.

"The bet is fifty dollars and Johnny's on the come."
