I always regretted not getting the 21st century editions of both 7CS4AP and HP4AP a lot sooner than I did. The loose games sections in particular are significantly expanded and very relevant to the games I play in.

I've started Othmer's book a few times and it's very dense and has a lot of charts and stuff and just doesn't look like any fun at all. Maybe some day I'll wade through it, but Canterbury Park rarely gets high-only stud games higher than $2/4 anymore, so I'm not feeling very motivated.

Thanks for linking that thread. Reminded me of a couple of posters I had happily forgotten about. Also of the free time I used to have.

Hi!!
I've always faced Stud only in Horse-tourneys. I have to admit it killed a lot of huge stacks because I suck. The general rules are known, but I'm really bad in Stud.
According to some posts I'm qualified to understand the book. ( already digest some none stud 2+2 books)
Hope this one will improve my stud!
By the way?? Any hi/Lo references in this one???

Nutsfolder,

No hi/lo reference in 7CSFAP. You'll need Ray Zee's hi/low split poker for that, which is essentially two books in one (it covers both stud and omaha hi/low).

Add Sklansky on Poker, which has a substantial section on Razz, and you've got HORSE covered.

Thank you for that helpful information!
I think I'll choose at least two of them (5 bonus books.)
Ray Zee's book sounds very interesting too

Your mileage will vary, but Ray's high-low book has made me more money than all other poker books combined, and I've read something like 130.

It's an excellent read. I don't have a lot of hi/lo experience other than some mixed games I've played in, but this book was a tremendous help right away. I think it might be the best poker book in print, regardless of game.

After I finish rereading 7CSFAP I'm going to reread that one again also.

I am currently reading this book. I am at the section where it advocates calling instead of raising in many situations.

Paraphrased from the book:

Quote:
A deuce brings it in, a five calls, a seven calls, a nine calls, you look down at Qc8d|Qs. You should call, because there is little to be gained by raising.
Isn't your hand the best hand here most of the time, and you have equity raising here? Sure, you don't win many times, but you win more often than the split sevens for example.

Where does the equity go, to the 987, or live flush draw?

Hi leavesofliberty:

Your quote is a little bit inaccurate. Here's the actual quote:

Quote:
A deuce brings it in, a five calls, a seven calls, and a nine calls. You have

Q8|Q

and are next to the bring-in. You should just call.
You have a hand that plays poorly multiway and by being next to the bring-in, there's no-one left to knock out.

Also, two paragraphs up it says:

Quote:
Let’s suppose that you are again in that $30-$60 game, three players call, and you are last. You should call liberally because you are getting 8-to-1 from the pot. But you shouldn’t raise with many hands since you are only getting 3-to-1 on your raise. Furthermore, some of the hands that appear to be worth raising really aren’t because the future action may be detrimental to them. Consequently, if it has become apparent that you can’t get heads-up, you should limp with many hands that other players will frequently raise with.
And this should abswer your question.

Best wishes,
Mason

Thank you for your response. I couldn't copy-paste out of the Kindle version I purchased. I see now reading it. It's a hand that plays poorly multiway. I enjoy the challenge of reading Skalansky's book.
