Secrets of non-Standard Sit n gos, phil shaw august 2010

http://www.amazon.com/Secrets-non-St...6912914&sr=1-1

From the Back Cover

If you think you know sit’n’gos... think again!

The sit’n’go (single table tournament) format is one of the most popular and exciting ways to play poker. However, ten players sitting at one table and playing for three prizes is not the only possible format. There are many other ways that these events can be run and these can provide a lucrative opportunity for the skilled player. In Secrets of non-standard Sit’n’gos, Phil Shaw navigates you through these exciting variants and explains how you can make them profitable.

The alternative formats discussed include:

* Heads-up sit’n’gos (2-player)

* 6-max sit’n’gos

* Sit’n’gos with two tables

* 45-player and 180-player sit’n’gos

* Step systems (with prizes as entries to bigger money sit’n’gos)

* Hyper turbos

* Super satellites

...and many more

As well as a deep examination of the correct strategies for all these events, Secrets of non-standard Sit’n’gos also analyses the most effective way to capitalise on rakeback and reward programs.

Phil Shaw is a high-stakes poker player who has played successfully at all levels of sit’n’gos, including buy-ins of $5,000. He is a regular contributor to Inside Poker and Poker Player magazines and is a sit’n’go instructor for Cardrunners.com. His first book, Secrets of Sit’n’gos, has become the definitive text for this type of event.

The thing is Phil Shaw is not a specialist at these different formats.His best game is the 9 seaters.

wubbie

I don't know if that is true, that is what amazon claims. so it is really a sales pitch i would expect colins moshmans and phil shaws would be comparable with colins getting a little bit more sales due to it being a two plus two book and it came out first.

Cwocwoc

on cardrunners phil shaw has branched out into and 8 part videos series where he did 18 to 180 man sit and goes.
and currently just finished a six part six max series.

if phil shaw is jackal then i also agree that his MTTSNG advice is not so great. it is great that he is making this book. perhaps some fresh blood will enter the MTTSNGs following his bad advice

Funny reading that when honestly Moshman's/2+2 really is THE standard for SNG books. I leafed through Shaw's book & honestly couldn't justify spending the $24. His $200 rate for SNG's makes me wonder as well. Nothing against him I just think that's stretching things a bit.

I prefer Phil Shaw's book on STT's to Moshman's.It looks better organised and Phil (Jackal69) is the better player as well imo.However I don't think either of them are MTTSNG specialists.

I thought the same at first but I will say now I think they are =. Moshman's book
is a tougher read in my opion and Shaw's is better organized. I think if I could only have 1 id take Moshman.

I thought both books were good and if I had to pick one Im not sure which way I would go. Im looking forward to this new book and a post of the table of contents in a few months would also be great.

OP, thanks for posting this.

I have a bias for Moshman's because I read and absorbed that one first. But I think they're both equal, with different strengths. Moshman's is better at giving you the step-by-step "rules" of how to play SNGs, while Shaw's is better at teaching you the deep theory needed for long-term success.

I usually tell people wanting to learn SNGs that they need to read them both and start with Moshman.

I'll be interested to read this new entrant to the field.

I'm curious about the contents of the book....

specifically, what is "...and many more"

How about DoN's? - these provide for some pretty weird situations at times. What about these new bounty type SnG's like Stars just introduced?

Anyways, as to Moshman vs Shaw... honestly, they compliment each other nicely and I like owning both.

224 pages seem a bit too low to cover even the formats already listed.

Partly my concern as well. If everything is getting general treatment here, things get watered down and the information loses value.

I love Phil Shaw's book on regular SnG's... but for this one, I've got to wait for a review or five.
