The book is not intended for online tournaments. All through it he constantly refers to live Vegas tournaments.

Re: Poker Tournament Formula - Rock-Paper-Scissors

I think it's a very clever analogy. Whether it's actually useful is a different issue because, as pig said, it's not intended (or really appropriate) for online tournaments, in which the fear of losings one's "tournament life" is never as great (among other differences). But I have found that the thinking occasionally informs my decisions in online tournaments, for the better -- just not in a an earth-shattering way.

Well said. I am finding the same thing after having at first written the books off. If nothing else, it gives me some perspective and once in awhile it influences my play. He seems to write off the Harrington style way too easily. At the levels and structures that I play at online, Harrington is a sure fire way to have a decent to good roi.

Here's what Snyder wrote to me on 7/5/06:

Quote:
Actually, when I read Harrington II, I was amazed at how similar my chip strategy chapter was to much of his advice. My entire book was actually written by the end of 2004, but Cardoza was so late on getting two other manuscripts I'd sent him to press, that I never sent him the poker manuscript. I updated some of the material by adding in data from the 2005 WSOP, none of which was in the original manuscript. By that point, I had almost quit playing tournaments. Karen and I were doing so well online, that the money from these small buy-in tournaments seemed negligible. The comments I make on Harrington II in my book were really pasted in long after I had developed the strategy I was using. I really did devise the whole thing starting from Sklansky's "System."

Re: Poker Tournament Formula - Rock-Paper-Scissors

Thanks for the post, Mason. To tell you the truth I don't fully understand what he's trying to say. Anyway, for a guy who hadn't actually read Harrington's book he sure spent a lot of time insulting Harrington's advice. At least he acknowledged that he was not talking about Harrington - only Harringbots like myself

Maybe the part that I'm missing is that in the second book, the one that I really enjoyed, Snyder was talking about high stakes tournaments where as the only place I play is on the Internet at lower stakes, and there I have found Harrington's advice works great. It doesn't take the place of talent but it can make a winner out of anyone that follows the advice and sticks to certain limits.
