Probably Michael Imperioli's best work. The supporting cast including Vince Van Patten and Pat Morita didn't hurt either.

Re: Poker Movies

California Split is a film masterpiece, period. My favorite Robert Altman flick by a mile, and I freaking love Bob. The poker just makes it that much better. One of the first films to ever utilize octophonic sound - hopefully they'll release it on BluRay with the proper mix one of these days. Largely improvised dialogue and a very impressionistic storyline that completely refuses to lead you by the hand. Elliot Gould isn't even acting, he just is. The scene where he analyzes the players in the $40/$80 stud8 game on the rail with George Segal is just an epic jam. And the shots of 1973 Virginia St. and the Mapes when they get to Reno make me want to electrocute my nuts on Uncle Rico's time machine every time. They just don't make movies like that anymore.

Another kickass Altman joint featuring poker in the Old West - McCabe and Mrs. Miller. So, so good. The Leonard Cohen soundtrack alone makes it worth the price of admission, never mind that it's mainly about gambling, whores and guns.

Re: Poker Movies

I wouldn't call Lock stock a poker movie, although there is some poker in it.

There really aren't that many good poker movies out there, if there is I haven't found them yet anyway. I'd have to say Rounders and Maverick probably.

Re: Poker Movies

I remember when Lucky You first came out and a chick and I decided to go on a movie date and I convinced her to see this citing it was a chick flick to get her on board.

The problem was that it was just that. Simply terrible.

Deal was terrible and a straight poker boom cash grab. A movie with every poker cliche and mucking aces full HU for some title so that some old guy gets his ride in the sunset. Don't be mad about the spoiler, I saved you time.

I actually really liked the Stu Unger movie. Well done and Imperioli was solid.

Jake Cody recently tweeted or Facebook posted about watching a movie about some killer that kidnaps people then calls the cops and makes them play HU for the persons life lol.

Poker movies seem really hard to do well because there is such a fine line and small margin of error with actual poker play and poker plot while bringing in the casual movie goer and actually just making a quality flick. Rounders seems to be the only movie to do that because it made important poker concepts also life lessons, so it tied in well. Plus the character development was solid.
