Play Poker, Quit Work and Sleep Till Noon! by John Fox Play Poker, Quit Work and Sleep Till Noon! by John Fox

I have seen many people online say how this book is like the holy grail, and allthough it is mostly about 5 card draw, it has some great stuff about grinding poker for a living that must be read.
Anyone have this book and can say if its worth it?
It seems to be rare and have seen it going on ebay and amazon for $75 to $150. But the gamblers bookstore has it for $39.99. It was published in 1977 I believe.

Yes! Yes! Yes! The poker strategy is woefully out of date. The parts on metagame and live game conditions are GOLD.

If the awful Let There Be Range is worth $1850, Fox is worth $18,500.

Since this book is both politically incorrect and makes no reference to holdem, I can praise this book to the stars, since I know none of you will read it. If you want an approach to poker that wasn't developed by an adolescent, get it.

There's a review of the book, written last year, here:
http://hardboiledpoker.blogspot.com/...leep-till.html

Mike Caro discussing Fox on RGP in 1998:

Quote:
John Fox is -- by the way -- a brilliant tactician, but he wrote
another book called, "How to Hustle Home Poker." It is partly about my
"exploits" as a schemer and hustling, even beyond the poker tables.
But most of the tales come from John's own experiences, I think.
Anyway, I didn't do most of the things he gives me credit for, and
wouldn't have felt comfortable doing some of them. ASQ is also
mentioned in that book, if I remember correctly.

Fox is now a regular on the bridge circuit -- one of the top players
-- and ASQ is married and lives in the Los Angeles area. ASQ plays
most often at Commerce, but has tended to move from club to club
throughout the years. He is one of the truly great draw poker players
and among my most memorable characters, as is John Fox. Hope this
answers your question.

I believe Mason originally rated this book a 9 or better but he does not recommend it to be read now. It was mentioned in a post on another thread:

I've read somewhere that there is some "angle shooting" techniques discussed in this classic of a book on 5-Card Draw. They didn't have professional dealers in Gardena when the book was written. I have not read the book but I heard its very very good.

I think it would be cool if Fox revised this book and applied the principles/tactics to today's game like Omaha and Hold'em. I'd buy it for sure

It wouldn't be the same. Fox says some things in that book you can't say in today's political climate. Besides, I think he's dead.

John Fox was a brilliant bridge player. I played with him both as a partner and as an opponent. He lived in Long Beach, CA. He was a brilliant tactician and a winning draw poker player. He used the fact that most people disliked him to his advantage at the tables. He was also a bigot, a woman-hater and grossly overweight. The last time I saw him was at a bridge table and he weighed well over 400 pounds. I also heard that he is dead, but this is unconfirmed.

This is interesting to know. He comes all over as James Bond in the book but then he did write it himself.
