Ok so I have been going through the forum which I find very helpful. I am trying to find a good book to start with. In reading the forums there seems to be lots of ideas on what to read first and some conflicting.

Would Theory of poker be a good read for someone who primarily plays online in 9plyr sngs, and .25 to $1 tournaments? I have been [laying online for about 2 years and would like to become a more skilled player.

Others I am considering are Getting started in holdem - ed miller and harringtons books

Would appreciate any thoughts or insights.

cheers

harrington on holdem comes w/ lots of v practical advice and is probably still your best bet for low level tournaments. that said, books are cheap. get them all

harrington on hold em, getting started in hold 'em, and top, are all very different books. and all very good books for someone trying to learn the basics. you can apply what you learn to nl. i'd read all three.

If you only play in sng's, look at "Sit'n Go Strategy" by Collin Moshman

Awesome thank you. Does it really matter which to start with?

If you mainly play sng you should def. get Moshmans book first, since 9 player sng is a very special format of tournament and plays very differently. Harringtons books are more for mtts.

True enough, but OP sounds like a poker noob (no offence, we were all there at one point).

While Sit'n Go Strategy might be the best book for SnG specialists, Harrington on Hold'em I-III will give OP a good foundation in tournament poker fundamentals.

You should also try Tournament Poker for Advanced Players.

That's five books. I'd say buy those, read those, re-read those, then read them again. A few good books mastered are better than a whole stack of books half-read & misunderstood.
