Hi,
I am new here so perhaps this book has been discussed before. If so please direct me to appropriate threads. Thank you.
Meanwhile, i would like to say , my pal got me this book for my birthday last October.
It's all about Draw poker which I played when I was a boy back in the sixties.
I have got a few of my poker pals to play this game now for tiny stakes, and we all enjoy it.
However, HOLD'EM is the main game we play, most nights of the week.
Nevertheless the advice I have learned from John Fox's brilliant book (in my opinion) about bluffing and recognising bluffs is the best I have ever read.
It has made me a far better Hold em player than I ever was before.
I win regularly now in tourneys at pub/club level( these are in England), for smallish stakes like £90 for the winner, and so on.
Having said that, some advice he gives, which is almost tantamount to cheating, I would never ever dare do, cos I would get my head kicked in in the places I go.
Within the rules and etiquette of the game, though, his advice is second to none, and I've read about 25 other good books.
Appreciate any replies.
Thank you

This book has been discussed in many threads - just do a search.

I have not read the book yet but it is deemed to be a classic and was rated very high by Mason. Based on your comments, I would definitely consider picking it up if I ever see it in a used bookstore.

I have had this book in my amazon wish list for months but have yet to pull the trigger.

I'm still trying to convince myself that $50-$90 for a used book that I have no idea the condition it is in and irrelevant to the game I play is worth it as a collector's item.

Last I checked, new copies were available at the Gambler's Book Shop in Las Vegas. I seem to recall the price was $40. The books were new, although they've been sitting on the shelves or in boxes for decades, so they're not "fresh off the press". I don't know if this book is in their mail order catalog or not.

I bought one there today. $40. Not used but definitely old, they have plenty of copies.

Hmm. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. It says used in the condition column, but in the description it says they were just in storage. This just might sway me to buy it now.

Is it worth the 40 bucks in you guys opinions? I have no idea why I want this book so bad, but every time I'm on amazon I have to talk myself out of buying it.

John Vorhaus raved about this book in Cardplayer last year in a series of articles titled The Ageless Wisdom of John Fox.

Part 1, Part 2

Can't find part 3...

I got a copy from gamblers bookshop a couple months back. "New" from storage, it's held up okay so far but I'm gussing that the old glue for the spine might be a problem eventually, allowing pages to fall out? Very small type, so have your reading glasses handy.

BTW, possibly one of the best book titles of all time.

Thank you all very much for your replies, and the links, appreciated.
And yes the book does fall apart. Mine is already sellotaped to death.
It's worth every penny though. Talking opponents into doing what you want them to do, being just one of many great pieces of advice.

I bought a hardback copy from GBC (now GBS) many years ago. It might be worth a call to see if they have any left in their warehouse.

limon has made some great posts about this work, but they are probably in the archives and older archives. It would well be worth searching for them.

My favorite section: Players of Modest Mentality Who Form Hypotheses, and the ensuing discussion. There is no telling how much money I have made from this section, and sections on tracking live play, analytic momentum, playing at the top of your game, etc. etc. etc.

Look for Fox's How To Hustle Home Poker; another classic. I got an unread copy for $30 by listing a search request on Amazon.

Thank you Phat Mat.
I shall re-read the section you mention and try and get his other book.
Delighted it has made money for you as well.

It“s a fun title and a decent read, but pretty useless for Hold“em AND today“s games. There is a lot of nonsense in this book too.
