I searched for this a little bit on amazon and did a 2+2 search, but couldn't find anything. Does anybody know if there is a book on the history of poker in the US? I'm roughly looking for something where they talk about Doyle and some Texans came to Vegas and how sketchy the games were over time and till this day. So far I've found a few okay books, but nothing great or that I'm really looking for. Any ideas?

Des Wilson's Ghosts at the Table (published last year) covers a lot of ground, including stories of the Texas road gamblers and poker coming to Vegas.

I believe James McManus' more comprehensive history of poker book (which has been serialized for the last couple of years in Card Player) is due sometime later this year. You could search his articles on CP for ones on topics that interest you.

Isn't there like 100+ years of poker before Doyle? (in U.S.)

In fact, there is an interesting anecdote from those days that survives to this day. It seems that a common street beggar had found his way into a game with several gentlemen well above his station in life. This beggar had been sparring with a distinguished author, and he was delighted that he so managed to put the author off his game. Indeed, he exclaimed after one memorable hand, "He called me with knave-high!" Everyone at the table found the situation quite amusing, except for the author, who failed to see any humor in it at all!

Touche, Eponymous! Except in the version of that yarn I know to be true, the author was holding QUEEN high!

lol...I know it really was queen high. It's good to see you really can laugh at it now. It is a classic piece of television.

btw, I looked forward to reading each installment of the history of poker in CP, so I'm sure it will be an excellent book. I'll definitely pick up a copy.
