Book Recommendations? Help!

Hello all!

Don't really post too often but trying to become more active as of late. Just a simple question.

I'm looking for a new book to read in relation to the games I play. The games I play are small stake home games where the buy ins are around $20. These games are super aggresive with maniacal fish all around and they're not capable of thinking beyond Level 1 or a really bad Level 2 thinking. Any book that describes low stakes live games? Because I've read a couple of books related to $1/$2 and they assume your opponents think, which mine do not. These are the only games I can play as the closest card room is in Florida 6 hours away from me. (Live in Georgia)

Any recommendations would be helpful!

Fyi, the once book I do own that may be closely related is titled Catching Fish: Beating $1/$2 by Edward Scimia.

Not sure there's a book for you so you might just trying playing ABC poker since you say your opponents don't think.

The buy in is $20 but you don't say how deep the stacks are. i.e. what are the blinds? And if the games are maniacal, then I assume people are doubling, tripling, quadrupling up.

You need to understand commitment in this game, so read Professional No Limit Holdem. Otherwise, just wait patiently until you have a relatively strong hand then stick in a lot of money. I suppose that's why there's no book about it, it's almost literally that single sentence.

Re: Book Recommendations? Help!

I knew I had forgotten to mention the blinds. The stacks aren't very deep since the blinds are usually .20/.40 or .25/.50. At quarter and fifty cent I usually buy in for $40 to get a deeper stack to start with but it's still only 100bbs.

The stuff you see here is absolutely absurd. People calling a 5xbb raise out of position with K6 because it's suited, or calling 3 streets with KQ, hitting the miracle 3 outer on the river (usually the flop would be 10 2 8 and I'll hold King 10 and give the lead up. It doesn't matter what the size of your bet is, what position their in, what happened pre flop, etc. I'll win still, but the craziest stuff happens there and I feel like I may be missing out on extra value in some situations.

You're right, there may not be a book on that. I have heard of PNLHE v1, but someone told me it's outdated. Is that true?? Because this forum seems to say otherwise.

I don't believe it's outdated. In my opinion, if you bought that book and read only the sections on Commitment and SPR (maybe 50 pages out of the whole book) you'd still be getting great value for money.

It's possible that the best book might be one on the mental aspect of poker because I'm guessing some of the suck-outs in that game must make your eyes water.

Good Luck

Maybe. There are several out there, and guys round here will be happy to give you their recommendations. (Better still, search will give you reviews.) I was somewhat less blown away by the Tendler book than a lot of other guys, but that's just one opinion amongst many.

Good Luck.
