so i just watched high stakes poker s6 e5 with that epic ivey vs dwan hand and it's inspired me to try to understand the game more deeply than i do at the moment.

i know the basics, but i'm sure i still make some big errors on the theory side and would like to understand it better.
stuff like playing ridic. deep (they were ~1kBB deep in that hand btw, lol) and how this changes ranges/lines taken/pot control etc.
i've read the term 'game theory optimal' a few times and would be interested to learn more about this too.

cheers

Thanks Benny ', those lectures look pretty awesome.

(Bookwise, I'm guessing The Mathematics of Poker is what OP is looking for?)

All--

FWIW, Polak's class is very well thought of at Yale.

i haven't read 'theory of poker' yet, is this still relevant for today's NL game (think limit was predominant when it was written)?

thanks for the recommendation

ToP will always be relevant imo. It is the foundation that all poker games are built on. It probably doesn't matter that it was written during the limit glory days bc most of the book's examples are from other variations of poker anyway. The concepts still apply bc they are universal to all games, with the exception of a few. The beginning of a section usually informs the reader that the following concepts are intended for a specific type of game or structure.

Those lectures are interesting but MoP is absolutely what the OP wants. You can view it as a very basic intro class on game theory using poker and other simple games you already know for examples..
Playing for Real by Ken Binmore is a great more general game theory text, but its really dry and haven't been inspired enough to get into it.
Game Theory: A Nontechnical Introduction by Morton D. Davis is a complete waste of time just because Chen's book will hold your interest so much more as a poker player.
Keep in mind im a newb/micro stakes player that got into poker via an interest in game theory.. Unless you play at pretty high stakes, optimal strategies will be a waste of time and you would be much better served by running tons of hands through stove to figure out exploitative strategies.

Prisoner's Dilemma by William Poundstone is an interesting and easy-to-read book that covers a lot of the history of the field and gives a layman's introduction.
