i first became acquainted with 2+2 Publishing, Mason Malmuth, Dave Sklansky etc..etc.. at a place called the gamblers bookshop in las vegas. i found 2 +2 books to be far superior to most other publishers although i recall reading a book on stud by conjelico? that was quite satisfying. has mason every published anything on cheating in poker? i would be keen to read it given all the discussion about the garret adelstein affair at hustler in los angeles. thank you

First, thanks for your positive comments about our books.

Second, I don't think ConJelCo ever did a stud book and suspect you may actually be thinking of our stud book.

As for your question about cheating, the answer is no. If you can find anything by Steve Forte I would recommend that. But I think all his stuff is currently out of print.

you are right, mason. the stud book is by 2+2. i placed a bookmark from a company called conjelco in it years ago. i saw the review you wrote about steve forte in your book review thread. quite a good thread, btw.

was there much discussion of cheating or even actual cheating in the california card rooms where you first started playing draw? what did you think of the player dealt games at that time? or was there no other option? thank you

There was always discussion of cheating in the sense that people were afraid of it. But there was never any discussion relative to detecting it or what to do about it if cheating even existed.

As for player dealt games, in some rooms that was the only option. In other rooms, jackpot games had started and they did use house dealers. Also, house dealers did not become wide spread until The Bicycle Club opened in 1984.

As for me, I never had a problem with player dealt games and you did get to play more hands per hour. But house dealer dealt games were probably safer from a cheating perspective.

mason, have you ever been cheated in a public card room in nevada or california? have you ever felt cheating was taking place?

In the games I play in, generally no. But there were two occasions where it was clear to me that one player was signaling the value of his hand to a partner.

But what I would call angles or other unethical play is there all the time. Three examples are

1. Players trying to see other player's cards

2. Players trying to see cards that get pitched too high

3. Players hiding their cards in an effort to get other players to act out of turn

How did you get more hands per hour in self-dealt games? In any self-dealt home games I have played, there were fewer hands per hour because the players aren't as good as professional dealers.

There were two decks. One deck was in play and the other deck was given to the player to the direct left of the dealer (and who would be the dealer on the next hand). He would shuffle the deck when the first deck was in play. Thus, there was never any waiting for the dealer to shuffle. Similar to today's shuffling machines.
