i would like to play a few WSOP events this year and I have never played poker for real money. I think I could be a good bluffer I sell timeshares for a living. Any tips for a newb?

Play some online and/or lower level local tournaments. Realise that poker is not all about bluffing and in most WSOP events is usually equivalent to setting money on fire

I just want to try it once I know I'm not going to win but that would be so cool if I was at the same table with Phil Ivey or Hellmuth or MAtusow

Welcome ... Have fun and play what you want. The WSOP is a great event to experience but also realize that there are a very high percentage of players who are there 'on business' and ready to send you home 'unhappy'.

If you want to use your 'selling' skills you may want to stick to cash tables where talking is more prevalent .. and the buy in might be a little cheaper on your wallet.

Getting at a table 'with' a high profile Pro is like winning at the slots at the airport .. it just doesn't happen. You certainly can find them around the rail and on break. GL

It is not like anything you are expecting. First, it is very loud in the room. Hundreds/thousands of people shuffling chips. There is a real funk factor. Some people are hygenically challenged and you may be sitting between two of them. The days are VERY long, far longer than you envision them being and the deeper you go the more mentally challenging it is. Fatigue is a real issue. If it is the first time you are playing live, you stand a good chance of being done by meal break.

The most important thing to do is to do a walk through a day or two prior to when you are playing. The bathroom lines and locations are very important. Find a bathroom that is a bit of a walk and you can go and be back quickly. The lines at the immediate restrooms can be long. Plan your water intake around the break times, no sense in loading up ten minutes after you come back from break. Try to be patient, although it can be very tough for someone not used to long long tournaments. There is a reason it is referred to as a grind.

I've been going to the WSOP for a decade or so and spend several weeks there playing the entire time. Endless side games, cash games, and you would be best to avoid them at all costs. The ones in the casino are fine. If you are invited, and if you are chatty it will definitely happen, someone will invite you to a private game. You are likely being set up and will get crushed.

You can definitely be seated with high profile players if you play the traditional draw type games. Some of them only have a couple hundred entries, the NLHE games are the largest draw. If you think you can bluff and have any real success with it.....you watch way way way too much Norman Chad.

Definitely play some small buy in casino tournament first so you get a feel for live events and test just how effective your bluffs are. And yes there is a chance you can be seated with a big name. I played my first real live tournament as the WSOP circuit event this week and at my first table was Carlos Mortenson.

Treat it like a vacation and spend what you can afford. I have played with named pros, it is fun, but their game is way above most others.

In other words, go for the experience.

Yes good advice. The buy ins to these events are equivalent to a good vacation so treat it like that. Plus if you exploit a table image of fun loving guy on vacation just trying their luck it may actually annoy some of the uber-serious players you'll tabled with if you start to win some pots from them.
