Hey guys new here,

I was just starting to become interested in the game, and I decided to go ahead and read David Sklansky's Theory of Poker and I was wondering where I could go to use this new information without a whole ton of risk. To practice, in a sense. I have tried stuff like WSOP's poker app, but I'm talking about actual practice with actual players, not players that all-in pre-flop with garbage because the chips are essentially worthless, like in the WSOP app. I've been watching the WSOP main event and that's been interesting, but again I would just like a place to practice and play.

Thanks,
Shade

i think online micro stakes would be the best (1c/2c stake).

live brick and mortar casino would be much too expensive to learn

You basically have to start by playing games for money. Take it as experience at first and write it off. Deposit $50, play 2nl and start learning.

Plenty of beginners threads if you search around. I remember when I started SirCuddles guide to beating the micros was the ****ing nuts. Times have changed but I am sure it's probably still a good starting point. I might just go back and re-read it myself. LINK

I second this suggestion. Start for the lowest stakes and grind your way up. It's okay to invest a little as you progress if you want to move up quicker, but put some time in at every limit and work on getting better. Don't rush it. It can take an awfully long time to get good at poker, so practice at low stakes until you are a crusher. Seek ideas from many sources but ultimately you must develop your own ideosyncratic approach to the game and question everything that people tell you about how to play, especially when it is stated very matter of factly.

One thing you'll need to work on - and there are many, as poker is a fabulously complex game - is observing and noting your opponents. You'll want to measure their aggression vs their passivity, their tightness vs their looseness and their honesty vs their bluffiness. You'll want to know if they go for thin value or not, and if they don't but they are decently aggressive you may conclude that they bluff a lot. Ultimately if you can determine your opponent's strategy then it becomes a trivial matter to destroy them (figuratively) and take their money.

Make sure to note if they open limp (just call when they are the first person to enter the pot, aside from the blinds) and especially if they do so with weak hands. Also note if they post. these are generally signs of weaker players who will be making a lot of mistakes and you profit in poker from your opponent's mistakes.
