Still never used a HUD, how bad is this? Still never used a HUD, how bad is this?

Hi All,

I've recently been trying to get back into online poker.

Back in the few years around black friday i used to play low/mid sngs and was a decent winner with 4 figure porfit so at some point at least i used to be a winner.

Nowadays i'm struggling to break even, for what could be many reasons.

Anyways, how important is using a HUD? I've never used one and when i've tried to read up on it it just confuses the hell out of me.

Would someone be able to give me some info on just important it is/is it neccessary/how do you best use it for a beginner etc

Thanks in advance

You are giving up an edge to most of the field......should be good enough reason to slug through the learning process we all went through when starting up with a database and HUD for the first time.

If you play on a site that doesn't allow them, then it's fine

I don't think a HUD is essential in sngs, at least not for hyper turbos or turbos. In my view you play sngs more against the structure than against other players.

"Over the time we spent together, I got to learn more about his thought process and his approach to the game. Some fun facts: Viktor doesn’t use any kind of poker database or HUD, and he doesn’t watch any training videos. In fact, he hasn’t used any of the resources that almost all full time online pros have." Phil Galfond on Isildur1

yeah I didn't use a HUD for a long time, looked too complicated, turns out it's not that hard to use the basic features and is interesting to see your graphs so yeah worth getting.

Or as another posted hinted if your not going to bother make sure you play on a site that doesn't allow HUDs so everyone doesn't have a big edge on you

For SnGs, a HUD could help you identify which players are shoving/calling correctly when shortstacked, and this can help you with the closer pushbot decisions. e.g. If you have a hand that is towards the bottom of your shoving range, but you know the BB is an overly loose caller, you'd be more likely to fold. Conversely, if your HUD shows the BB is a nit, you can shove wider and print money.
A HUD is also pretty useful in general for separating the nits from the fish if you play in a large player pool and can't remember the tendencies of everyone. e.g. If you see someone opening for 4x UTG and his main statline is 35/2, you know your AQ is no good. Vs a LAG playing 36/26, your AQ is very good. Knowing the stats of your opponents can help you go from an "easy fold" to a "snap-shove" with the same exact hand.

The worse your ability to recall past hands will determine how valuable an hud is. Remember that players evolve and that preflop looseness doesn't always equate to postflop over aggression.
