Skipping the Limit section in books? Skipping the Limit section in books?

Just recently bought the Getting Started in Hold 'Em book as recommended by the FAQ. I noticed that it has a large section on exclusively Limit Hold 'Em and then another section exclusively on No Limit Hold 'Em. Since I am only learning No Limit at the moment, is it worth it to read the Limit section? I'm worried in case there are a few vital concepts that I miss out on that are covered in the Limit section.

If you have no interest in limit and only want to play boring old no limit you shouldn't have bought the book in the first place

So I take it I do need to read it then?

How long have you been playing and how many books have you read?

If this is your first, the book I would start with is Theory of Poker as it will give you a strong foundation applicable in many games.

Only being playing/learning seriously for a few months. This is the first book I've read.

Do you suggest finishing this book first then starting Theory of Poker or dropping this book now and starting Theory of Poker now?

I am going to learn Limit poker, just trying to stick to No-Limit for now so I don't get confused.

theres no point learning limit poker mate you will be wasting your time, the format is dead and alot different to no limit, i would recommend "The grinders manual" it explains everything very well and its the most recent and up to date book around at the minute

Button raises, I 3 bet JJ, he calls.

KJ6r

I bet, he raises, I 3 bet, he 4 bets....ad nauseum until we're all in for 32 flop bets.

He had AT.

Game is dead tho.

Op's decision comes down to his motivations for playing. If you want to maximize immediate profits, just study and play nl exclusively. If you want to be a favorite in any format, you gotta play lots of formats. If not now then when?

My motivation for playing is fun. Thus I study and play the games that I find the most fun. This may be different for everyone.

I would stop with GSIH, read ToP, and then go back to GSIH.

I am stealing this idea from someone, but I don't remember who so I can't give credit. To paraphrase, learning a specific game first instead of common characteristics is like trying to put windows up without having laid a foundation.

So would you recommend reading the Limit sections in books to get an idea of those common characteristics?

Another vote for TOP. Fundamentally sound base. I have probably read it 5-6 times in the past 15 years.

I started playing limit this past June. TOP read last summer was eye opening. I got alot out of all the earlier readings (have played +2M NL hands).... but I got more out of this last reading as I was coming into it from a different viewpoint with much more poker experience.

TOP is definitely one to own. Its nice to have and be able to go back and glance through it.

I know this other book covers just about all variations of poker, but the No Limit section in Doyle Brunsons Super System II is worth reading.

Also. Limit poker is worth learning and playing too IMO.. I think youre getting more of the fundamentals out of that game style which are necessary. I think it puts a limit on bluffing so you can focus on the other parts of the game and hand strength is more prominent.

This is of course my own opinion. I only have about 12 years of on and off experience..

I do own Sklankys ToP and yea you should definitely read it.

I am not talking about common characteristics just between limit and no-limit. I guess I should have phrased it better. It will teach you concepts important in many forms of poker.

there are lots of plays and different thinking in limit. some can be transferred over and if you dont know them you can use them. the most well rounded players seem to make it the biggest in poker for some reason.
