Poker and gym
I am a regular grinder playing at least 6 hrs per day poker. I will try to add weightlifting and cardio training in my routine because i became fatty unfortunately. From your experience is better to train before or after a poker session
I read that is better to train early in the morning because this way you burn lot of calories but i fear of being tired after the workout. When you train and why?

Re: Poker and gym
You'll feel tired in the first week or so, but then you will feel more energized after a balanced workout as you get used to it.
Mornings are better as you will be much more ready and rested for training, however if you have been living a sedentary life (eg: sitting in front of a monitor drinking Coke for long hours almost every day), don't start with too much pressure/weight/length. As that may result in a massive coronary or a stroke.

Re: Poker and gym
There isn't really a better time of the day.. it's what's best for you and how it fits into your schedule. I much prefer an early morning workout.. a friend of mine prefers an early evening workout.. both are fine.

Re: Poker and gym
I play full time and workout 6 days per week plus cardio for me I much prefer working out before playing. I feel I focus better. Plus it's a drag to go lift after a losing session.

Re: Poker and gym
I would think that working out in the morning or afternoon would be best if you are playing 6hrs of poker a day. Since peak playing hours are usually in the evening. I am pretty sure that you will burn a similar amount of calories regardless of the time of your workout. Some people however do not function well in the mornings, so this may be a factor. There is a lot to consider, and most of it deals with your personal preferences.
Also, if you are waiting until late at night, it may make sleep more difficult. Like a poster above suggested, at the first onset of your workout routine you will feel worn out, but the more you get acclimated you will start to wake your body up and feel energized by working out.
Also, the gym is usually less packed in the morning/afternoon if you so happen to be going to a public/membership style gym.

Re: Poker and gym
Ideally,
studies have shown that the best time to work out is shortly after you wake up. This really helps your body establish a very strong sleep cycle (circadian rhythym). You basically train your body to WAKE UP and TURN ON for the day. It also ups your metabolism and you will burn more calories throughout the day.
The first week will suck though, you will feel super sluggished and tired. But if you can push pass that, by the 2nd and 3rd week you will feel your energy level and endurance substantially increase. You'll be able to focus for longer periods of time.
Another thing that will help is if you lift and stretch AFTER your sessions as well.
If I were to suggest the "perfect' model, it would be something like
Wake up
--within 20 minutes of waking up
20 minutes worth of static and DYNAMIC stretching (arms, legs, back, hips, shoulders)
20 min cardio (run/bike a couple of miles)
SIX HOUR POKER SESSSION
--within 30 minutes of finishing your session
45 minutes worth of lifting/stretching
If you could work in the above 3 - 5 times per week, you will notice a big change in your energy level after 1-2 weeks.
Lastly, there is really no such thing as a "bad" time to workout. Anytime and any periodic workout routine is a good one.

Re: Poker and gym
Workout before, definitely a good habit to get into for many reasons. Enforces mental discipline. health body=healthy mind. Especially during cardio, it gives me time to reflect on my play.

Re: Poker and gym
Thanks dhiharris. I for taking time writing a full answer. Most people say that it is bad to train late in night because you will have problems sleeping

Re: Poker and gym
If you wake up earlier then you are more hours awake then you are more tired in the night then you can sleep better. Problem solved

Re: Poker and gym
Its different for everyone, but what I will say is things like "do it before breakfast to burn more cals" and "if you eat before bed it is worse for you" are bull****. Running around a field will burn off the same amount of cals if you do it morning, noon or night. Eating a big mac meal makes you gain 1000 cals whether its first thing in the morn or right before you go to bed.
Of course that is not to say that there are optimal training routines or that you should gorge yourself every night before bed. The best way to burn fat is to get the heart rate up for example by running flat out for 1min as fast as you possibly can, then a quick walk/slow jog for 30 seconds. Repeat this a few times to find your comfort zone and build on this weekly.
For food you should aim for 6 small meals a day to keep the metabolism ticking over, these 6 small meals should equal the same amount of food that you would normally eat in 3 meals.
This is very basic advice, but there is no point in going into advanced stuff at the very beginning of your training.

Re: Poker and gym
If you're looking to lose weight, it's not that simple.
Running for 30 minutes will go approximately 400 calories (depending on your weight/body fat). You could eat an extra sandwich or donut and put that right back in to the mix.
Weight training can work to lose weight too, but again, it's all about mastering the diet.
Get rid of all sodas, desserts, and eat bread/pasta/cereal more sparingly.
Try to get more protein and fat in there.
Take a meal replacement smoothie if you have to.
Try to calorie count for a couple days until you can estimate how many you're getting.
Set a max, maybe just 2500 or 2000 if you're trying to lose weight.
If you intake more, than that you have to burn it. Michael Phelps eats 10,000 calories in a day but he burns enough to keep himself lean.
