You're correct, there are a ton of strategies that you will need to learn/practice at higher stakes but are ineffective at the bottom of the barrel. Just play straight forward as possible at 2NL, they won't pay attention to you trying to balance your range and honestly I would play pretty exploitative abc poker. When you do decide to move up make sure you're properly BR'd for it and then you can practice other concepts and strategy's.
