Haha, I went and met up with my friend, then grinded out a couple of hours after I got back. I was doing 50NL so the VPPs came faster than usual, and I made it with time to spare. ^^

Stars uses their VIP system instead of rakeback, however it is a form of rakeback. Depending on the amount of volume you do, it can be better than rakeback on other sites if you get to Platinum and above. You don't have to do anything special on PS to get FPPs, just start playing with real money.

However, if you're trying to get rakeback on other sites like Full Tilt, make sure you find a good affiliate and sign up to FT through the affiliate.

I'm looking for a simple pot odds calculator that I can use while online which tells me what my pot odds are and my chance of winning the hand. Looking for some software which is not complicated or expensive! Any suggestions?

For pot odds, use a calculator. Pot odds = ($ in pot) / ($ to call)

For hand odds, try downloading pokerstove and playing with it a bit.

At the table, you can also use the rule of 2 & 4. For example, if you have 4 to the flush on the flop, there are 9 cards that give you outs to the flush. If you were to shove the flop, you have 2 cards to come (the turn and river). Multiply your outs by 4. If you shove the turn, you have 1 card to come. Multiply your outs by 2.

On the flop you have ~36% chance to make your flush (9 outs X 4).
On the turn you have ~18% chance to make your flush (9 outs X 2).

in holdem manager, there is a $ev column under the sessions tab. almost all my numbers there are negative, or only slightly positive. do negative numbers mean i am running below expectation? how do i interpret this number?

also, on the graphs, how do i (is there?) a way to filter by date?

Most of these should be here:

Beginners Forum Frequently Asked Questions

or here:

www.urbandictionary.com

However,

In My Opinion
Top Pair Good Kicker
Hold'em Poker For Advanced Players (book)
Low Content

EV is your EXPECTED value, so if your EV is -26, and your actual $ is 5, then you're running 31 dollars above expectation. Which is pretty nice.

btw, sick 8 buyin downswing there man.

Re: ***** Official Dumb Questions Thread ****

So I'm a college student, I like playing poker, I recently started playing micro stakes NLHE online and am enjoying myself so far. I've got a fairly obsessive personality, and take my hobbies very seriously. Although I do things for fun, anything I do often I aim to become good at, whether thats a video game or whatever. So obviously, I'm interested in improving my poker playing. So my question is, are things like PT/HEM and subscriptions to video coaching sites necessary? And, as a full time student (and I take my studies seriously), will Poker take up too much of my time?

I see no realistic way to answer this question, so I will answer with a question.

Do you want to improve your game by learning from players that already know how to beat the game, or on your own?

Are you the type of person to become obsessed with something so much that you block out all other items on your agenda?
