The [ ]'s are just like check boxes, they're overused and ******ed for the most part.

Like if someone says something that isn't funny, someone would quote that and do this.

[ ] Funny
[x] Wasted time reading

When someone quotes and says 'this' they're agreeing with the stuff they have quoted.

I can learn anything off by heart, but I am now trying to understand more of the how's and why's instead of just the what's - so I can start working things out for myself instead of just blindly following a pro's advice. So the intuitive bit is interesting - but it's just not intuitive to me! Is there a good source of this type of info, ie what type of hands play well/bad in certain situations?

many thanks
Just find the best book or two for the game you play. If you play NL, this could be the Harrington books (Tournament/Cash); if you play Limit, you could read Small Stakes Hold Em by Ed Miller. The good books should explain why you're playing the hands you're playing instead of just giving you a chart. I know off of the top of my head that Miller's book has a good preflop discussion.

From there, build on your knowledge by reading and posting the forum, especially to the sub-forum dedicated to the game you play the most. By reading and participating in the strategy posts, you'll get a deeper understanding of pre-flop play.

But to get you started, there are about six groups of hands:

-those hands that play well in about any situation: Big pairs and big suited connectors (AA-JJ; AQs-KQs...also AKo despite its lack of suitedness)

-offsuit hands with high cards that generally play better against fewer opponents (AQo-ATo; KQo-KTo)

-speculative hands that play well cheaply against many opponents like small pocket pairs (22-66) and medium to small suited connectors (QJs-54s), and suited Aces (A9s-A2s)

-medium pocket pairs that could play well against few opponents or many opponents (TT-77)

-hands that grow in value as your position improves and there are fewer players (hands that you could steal with, basically), like A9o or Q7s or K6s, etc. This depends quite a bit on game conditions and the people you are playing against, and you'll see that your range will expand considerably as you approach the button and no one has yet entered the pot.

-all other hands which are garbage and you shouldn't play.

That's not comprehensive and there's all sorts of room to disagree if you wanted to, but it should give you a framework to begin thinking of why you're playing hands instead of just "Play this in EP, this in MP and this out of the blinds."

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Hiya

I asked how you set up playing 24 tables at the same time and you said you stack the tables - does this mean you cascade all 24 tables on the same monitor? If so, you must get tables popping up on top of each other as you play a hand - wouldn't that be just too distracting?

Thought I posted twice today but haven't come through - I'm running at 23/7/2.25 over 3K hands - I thought I was a nit, but looks like I am a fish, so I guess I have to stop playing OOP and raise the hands I do play. I am breaking even though, but I want to start earning.

Any cheap way to get a bit of coaching? Someone mentioned in a previous post something about videos for CR - whatever that means?

Great thread. Cheers. Rob

When you're "stacking" you're playing with tables directly overlapping, not cascading. Most (if not all) sites don't change to another table until after you have completed your action on the current popped up table.

I looked in the dictionary but I couldn't find it. What does wwp mean? What had happened I called a guys bet on the flop for all of his chips(I had top pair on a paired board) and he lost and said wwp.

Maybe he meant "wp" which would be "well played".

Yeah could be. I think he was pissed off though...I had a weak hand preflop and just outflopped him(but I had position and he just miniraised after I called). Maybe he meant well played though...

i have a starting bankroll of $500, and this is gonna sound dumb, but Im not sure at what blinds I should start playing to maintain a somewhat safe bankroll...

i prefer NL cash games, 9-players ... any advice?

NL25 seems somewhat safe if you are willing to move down, it seems the consensus is around 20-30 buyins for NLcash

Try 10NL. If you're satisfied you can beat it, move up to 25NL. Drop down to 10NL is you lose more than a few buy-ins at 25NL.

Until you have some idea how your skill level compares to online play, be very conservative with your roll. (Your roll, not necessarily your play).

Can someone explain the stars rake trap to me? I'm playing LHE 6m and FR .5/1 and hear I'm in it or near it.

I'm guessing that it's close to impossible to beat the rake at that level.

It used to be possible in the old days when everyone sucked hard... i guess it's not anymore.

Well, the games are still incredibly beatable, so I think people are just talking about high caps on rake at certain limits, and I'm just looking for some kind of rough guide to the impact it has on win rates at certain levels. I'm guessing the impact spikes at a certain level and then drops off, and I'd like to minimize my time at that level.

What does 'floating' mean. Also, do you have any strategy for reducing the jaded feeling of staring at a computer screen for many hours?

Cheers.

Floating is calling a flop bet with nothing with a plan to bluff raise most turns.
