I can learn anything off by heart, but I am now trying to understand more of the how's and why's instead of just the what's - so I can start working things out for myself instead of just blindly following a pro's advice. So the intuitive bit is interesting - but it's just not intuitive to me! Is there a good source of this type of info, ie what type of hands play well/bad in certain situations?
many thanks
Just find the best book or two for the game you play. If you play NL, this could be the Harrington books (Tournament/Cash); if you play Limit, you could read Small Stakes Hold Em by Ed Miller. The good books should explain why you're playing the hands you're playing instead of just giving you a chart. I know off of the top of my head that Miller's book has a good preflop discussion.
From there, build on your knowledge by reading and posting the forum, especially to the sub-forum dedicated to the game you play the most. By reading and participating in the strategy posts, you'll get a deeper understanding of pre-flop play.
But to get you started, there are about six groups of hands:
-those hands that play well in about any situation: Big pairs and big suited connectors (AA-JJ; AQs-KQs...also AKo despite its lack of suitedness)
-offsuit hands with high cards that generally play better against fewer opponents (AQo-ATo; KQo-KTo)
-speculative hands that play well cheaply against many opponents like small pocket pairs (22-66) and medium to small suited connectors (QJs-54s), and suited Aces (A9s-A2s)
-medium pocket pairs that could play well against few opponents or many opponents (TT-77)
-hands that grow in value as your position improves and there are fewer players (hands that you could steal with, basically), like A9o or Q7s or K6s, etc. This depends quite a bit on game conditions and the people you are playing against, and you'll see that your range will expand considerably as you approach the button and no one has yet entered the pot.
-all other hands which are garbage and you shouldn't play.
That's not comprehensive and there's all sorts of room to disagree if you wanted to, but it should give you a framework to begin thinking of why you're playing hands instead of just "Play this in EP, this in MP and this out of the blinds."
Good luck and welcome to the forum.
