above all have fun, poker isn't life or death. It's only a game.
I just can't agree with this for a beginner As one gets experienced it becomes relatively easy to sit back, relax and chat away as you are comfortable with the dynamics of live play. When starting out it can be very overwhelming and ones play can suffer if one is too concerned with being social.

I like to set chips to exact amount I want to bet/raise behind the line then push it in. Least prone to mistake IMO.

Same here, also I'm one of those that says "raise" before counting out chips. I find it easier to put the call amount in then I can more accurately calculate how much I should raise. Also tells the dealer that I am making a decision and not staring blankly into space. (and apparently people saying "raise" then counting out the amount tilts some people, that's an added bonus)

Re: live tells when betting?

Like in most walks of life, confidence is extremely important. When I'm at the table, a lot of the time I put myself in the state where I say to myself, "I have the nuts, I have these chips I can bet, those are my winning cards." I know I'm going to win, so I do. You might also be picking the wrong places to bluff, so make sure you don't bluff too many people, and you read people as weak first.

I would add caution to that. "You don't have to win every hand" is possibly the best advice I ever received, thinking you deserve to win every pot can lead to a lot of trouble.

Re: live tells when betting?

My two cents-

I noticed a few months ago that when i look at my hole
Cards and decide to fold it i would be ready to fold
It (hands on the card ready to throw it in) even if the action was
Still 5 seats to my right. And this led me
To notice other little things too.

My routine is to look at my hole cards and then put a chip on top of it to protect it. I make sure to not prepare the call amount or the raise amount
Until action is to me. Sometimes it is easy to hold the 3 chips for a 3dollar limp way ahead of your turn.

While waiting i play with chips in hand (but never the chip amount i call or bet with)

When in a pot (especially heads up) i stare at the pot. Controlling breathing which helps to calm me down especially in big pots. While staring at the pot i review the betting pattern for that particular hand and go back with my assumed range of
Villain.

Now ive learned to relax and be more
Social at the table (which is actually extracting information)
When i find myself in a tight spot i fall back to my usual routine and this calms me down.

Hope it helps
