I'm not sure how to phrase this question so I will keep typing until something makes sense then delete the pointless.

I understand that a cash game player and professional play poker by selecting their game and their stake then they camp out in that place and just keep playing hands.

What does an MTT player and/or professional do?
Do they have a schedule of weekly/monthly/yearly tourney that they always play and travel to or regester for the online ones on that schedule? Example. They play the Sunday Million to start their week. Then on Monday evening they go to The Vic for a £50 freeze out.
Tuesday they play the whatever tourney on Full Tilt. Then on Thursday they fly to Spain for the EPT festival . . .

Or do they spend their time trying to satellite into tourney beyond their bankroll then play when they get into the big ones.

Do they play in SnGMTT on a regular basis and grind them out like the cash players grind out hands? Or even STTSnG

Would they play cash games in most of their sessions and only play tourney when the ones they look forward too are coming up?

How would a keen poker player get started as an MTT player and how should he spend his time??

Sorry about this long winded one. If anyone can shorted this to a better question. Go for it.

The further question occurs. Is there such a thing as a purely MTT professional or specialist?

Sort of. A professional mtt player is going to pick a schedule that they feel maximizes their expected value within their bankroll. I would say for most online mtt'ers it would consist of playing online most nights except for big live events as things like a small freezeout at the Vic isn't going to be worth their time.

Or do they spend their time trying to satellite into tourney beyond their bankroll then play when they get into the big ones.

They do this as well.. sometimes to play in the bigger tournaments (and often times selling pieces of themselves) or if on a site like PokerStars that gives T$, just using the T$ to buy into their normal mtt schedule with.

I assume you mean multi-table sngs when you say sngmtt? Yes, some will grind those alongside their regular mtt schedule in order to increase volume. Some like to stick with just mtts. Same goes for stts.

They might play cash games from time to time in order to do things like clear a bonus/bump up the number of vpps/fpps they have.. or to work on deeper stack play.. or just for a change of scenery for a bit. However, most are just going to stick with mtts.. they just won't start their session until their schedule starts.

Same way you do any other form of poker.. try it out a bit, read some books, read some 2p2 posts, watch videos.

Yes, of course there are professionals that pretty much only play mtts.

Being a time constrained reg rec, I play online MTT whenever I have a whole day off (maybe once or twice a month). This opens the door to the possibility of binking a big win one day (so far $1100 is my top score). Since my cash game at nano stakes is OK and my STT game is better, these MTT are effectively free rolls, since the cash/STT maintains my role. I buyin up to $20 MTT.

I've been following this strategy for two years and it effectively means all my online poker is free, plus I've made a small profit take the last two years.

Obviously I hope to bink a big one, but it's a bit irrelevant, because it is lifestyle that prevents me moving up, not bankroll. For me it is entirely a recreational pursuit.

As for learning MTT - Kill Everybody is excellent as are the two books which follow the tournament play of three pros, but I don't have them anymore and I can't recall the title/authors, but no doubt someone will.

Also Harrington's books are good and I still use M in my HEM2 to assess my inflexion points.

I love SNG STT (Moshman's book is ace) but I never play SNG MTT because I never worked out the best way to play a 1500 (level 1 -75bb) starting stack in this format. Am MTT proper has a starting stack of 3000 (level 1 - 150bb) which is a dream for a cash player, with so many fish playing MTT.
