Is this +EV?

You're at a limited re entry tournament where if you go bust you can re enter at the start of the 2nd, 3rd or 4th level. When you re enter you get moved to a different table.

Money is not hugely important, you just want the best chances of winning. (£20 entry and £750 or so top prize)

If you're hovering around the starting stack towards the end of level 3 is it +EV to start shoving every hand blind?

Pros

- You might not get called and you earn a few BBs
- You might get called and win and therefore double your stack
- You might get called and get busted and you re enter and you're in the same position you would have been anyway

Cons

- You might get called and not be covered. Get crippled and miss the cut off for re entry

What do you think? Any other pros and cons that I have not considered?

Re: Is this +EV?

To be simple and honest, no. To get more complex, doing this with every hand is certainly not +EV. The problem with your strategy is that a large percent of the time with any two cards you won't win more than 2/5 of the time. The number of times you would lose would not make up for losing your buy-in again and again. If you did this with good hands, it would turn out a slightly positive EV. Even while being doubled up in the final round you might not do well in the tournament anyway. Wasting all those buy-ins is pretty unreasonable. You'd do a lot better just playing the tournament well. I would suggest you buy Dave Sklansky's book on tournaments for more information.

Re: Is this +EV?

I'm not sure about this particular situation. I would imagine that other players would call the shoves with weak hands for the same reason as you're shoving.

There's an amusing video of Gus Hansen shoving all in blind for about 20 hands in a row where he was in a tournament league where he had to come first to get enough points to qualify for the final. That strategy worked because his opponents couldn't afford to go busto. (They had to finish in the top 3 or 4 to qualify). Hellmuth called one of the early shoves with AJs, and lost to a set, sending him on one of his trademark tirades. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gq3zZbj8TDE
