One of their claimed selling points is that you are guaranteed not to lose money. The way I see it is that you are guaranteed to lose $20 per month. You have to figure that most of the players there are going to be playing like every game is a free roll and will play accordingly (i.e. bad).

Thank you ronmon. I did play a couple trnys last nite, one MTT and two SNGs. On the MTT, the play was pretty bad with no bet sizing thought or thought on which cards to play or position by most. Some of the players were okay. The trny would stop every 10-15 min. with message that they were waiting for hands to end on tables and play would stop for a few minutes and then resume. On one SNG, one person just went all in every hand. On the second SNG, the play was a little better. So, yeah, it did seem like freeroll-type stuff. I was hoping that if you accumulate points you would be able to move up to better play levels and if anyone who played there knew if that can happen on that site.

I learned online play at PS and I love that site. I don't think I would have learned anything (good anyway) by learning while playing at clubWPT. Just wanted to check it out in case that is all we are able to play at some point. I'll probably keep trying different trnys for the next week to see and will post results of my conclusions. Would still like to hear from anyone who uses it regularly.

Typical, non-educated response. If you can't turn a positive R.O.I on ClubWpt then you are definitely in the correct forum.

Subscription sites are a good value for a certain segment of the poker playing public. They are especially good for players who are interested in learning Tournament Poker. Beleive it or not, there is an entire subculture of players that play nothing but subscription sites because they always turn a profit, and still have the chance to win up to a $11,000 prize. With around 200 cash tournaments a month with a prizepool ranging from $50-$11,000 this would equate to a .10 per tournament buy-in. Show me a cash site that you can turn .10 cents into $11,000 playing in only two tournaments.

Subscriptions sites aren't a good place for cash poker(ring games) Sit-n-goes can be hit or miss as another contributor already mentioned. However, for learning the nuances of tournament poker they are excellent. Learning the discipline it takes to navigate a large field has extreme value. Understanding how to beat manic aggression pays huge dividends later. Learning how to master position play, without have to LOSE money doing so is worth $20 a month.

I use to play at Spadeclub, which is now defunct. I spent $147 there for 9 mos of play, and received 3 checks in excess of $500 from them. More importantly, I won two side events and had 9 additional cashes out of 37 live tournament played and finished in the top 200 in division II according to Pokerpages. I earned both POY and BLuff pts as well. Not trying to toot my own horn here, just stating this to refute "the wasted $20 per month".

For those thinking that subscription poker sites might be a good fit, here is a list of sites: (this is just a list and are most defintely not ranked in any order)
  • pureplay.com
  • clubwpt.com
  • goldstrikepoker.com
  • nlop.com
  • grrrinders.com

Update on playing at clubwpt this week. Ran three MTTs. They play much like freerolls in beginning of trnys, but if you dodge and stay in 'till middle to end, the play improves. The players drop out very quickly and after about 45 min. about half the field is gone. The last one I played today, came in second and scored $20. The software certainly isn't as smooth as PS or FT, but am having some fun so far.....

Subscription sites can be excellent for learning tournament strategy. You should also be playing freerolls and having a stab at real money tourneys (live or online) too but all tournaments run pretty much the same regardless of the buy-in and the quality of the field. Taking advantage of situations is the key to winning or cashing big in tournaments and a decent, thinking player will easily make back the monthly fee on a sub site.

I can't speak for clubwpt as I did sign up for it as a basic member but there were no freerolls available to try at the time and play money tournaments are never going to give you a real taste for a site.
Here's my take on the subscription sites I've played at.

SpadeClub (defunct)

The best so far. Good tourneys with good structures. Decent payouts for the serious recreational players who want to see some fruit for their work. The first time I played there the first comment I made in the chat box on a talkative table was "this table has a live feel" and 24 hours later I logged on and had a friendship request from the player that busted me when I was 70-30 preflop. SC had it's fair share of drama and chat-abuse-******s and players calling with trash hoping to put a beat on you but it was, on the whole, a friendly place where long term friendships and rivalries were built, we played hard, played for fun, played for a few dollars, and railed each other in the weekly and monthly games if we busted early. Several times I saw players taking the sickest of beats (to idiot calls!) deep in th 5k/30k and then 2 minutes later the were railing their friends. The play was variable, but on average was far better than any microstakes game on the net (but to be fair the standard in the micros has improved considerably in the last year or so).

NLOP

Barry Shulman sent SpadeClubbers there when he folded SC face up. Easy tourneys but not enough payout spots to make it worthwhile (winner take all lol!) and not an enjoyable experience (graphics are like blipverts for anyone who remembers Max Headroom and they threatened to fry my brain so I quit despite the several months of membership that Barry had so generously organised for me). I wouldn't play there if they sponsored me.

Goldstrike

Small fields, mostly ex SCers, very tough games. My computer froze every time I played there plus it never looked like it would get enough takers to be a goer. I'll be surprised if it survives 2011.

PowerPokerClub (defunct)

A temporary home for many of the better SC players - promised far more than it could ever deliver and we'll never know why it folded but paying out left, right and center with overgenerous referral bonuses and big payout tourneys might have been a factor....

PurePlay

The first subscription site I played on albeit only as a basic member. Won four $10 freerolls with ease playing Phil Hellmuth style "tight is right". There were no antes at any stage of a tourney so all you had to do was play supertight and hope for a little luck at the end. Someone directed me to SC and I dropped PP. It would freeze far too often for me to be confident that it was worth parting with my cash to join as a full member.

PurePlay the return

PurePlay sent an email out to basic members awarding the all with a trial full membership last weekend. I played a few cash tourneys and they were much as before - full of crazy all in donks - and sure enough playing supertight gets you to the final table almost every time and then you shoot for the one or two payout spots. Didn't play enough games to get lucky. I did play a $2000 weekly qualifier where the top 5 qualify for the final. So my strategy was, yep, supertight and I qualified with ease. We were down to 6 players and these guys were betting big in dry pots with the baby stack all in, bleeding chips all over the place and funnily enough the 2nd stack busted out and the player who has less than 2 x BB made it. The final was a different story. Figuring that half the qualifiers were nits and the other half were lucky ragsters I picked my spots, never hit a flop, and doubled and triple barrel bluffed thebig pots. Went to bed at 00.45 local time as I was dying for sleep and stacked off to bust in 105th place out of more than 1800 starters. With no bad luck, a payout (top 10 spots lol!) of $50 or more would have been a good bet if I'd stayed awake.

No antes, donk filled small games, nit filled big games, load of old rubbish. An unclaimed $40 from a few years back sitting in my account, if I claimed it they'd take 1/3 in taxes and then the fee for cashing a foreign check would leave me with little more than enough to buy a peanut.

Grrrinders

This site has tons of potential and is looking to avoid the mistakes that the other sites made. There is a group of core players there already before the site launches for real. About 10% of the players I would happily stake in a big live event if I was rolled to stake them. Another 10% are weak players looking to get lucky. The majority are decent players who make the kind of A-rag and small pocket pair mistakes that are common in live games, or good to strong players who don't want to risk $ on cash sites, or who also play live or online for real $ but enjoy the social aspect of Grrrinders. The concept is well thought out and they are the only sub site I've seen that really do listen to player feedback.

Which site is the best?

Pureplay is easy money (but it's more fun watching paint dry and you'd make more $ anyway if you grind a cash site) but because the tourneys have no antes you only have to worry about the blinds deep in a tourney and the correct strategy is ABC supertight until the last two tables and only then do you need to observe the other players and figure out who you should steal from, shove light against, shove premiums against, trap with premiums etc etc. It won't improve your game because with the lack of antes the action is never forced unless you ran so bad that your stack is really short at the end, an essential part of the risk and reward apsect of tournaments.

Grrinders will have tougher games than Pureplay but will do a lot more for your game and, as far as I can tell, it is the only site actively trying to attract good players as well as fish, and if you are a good player you should easiy win your monthly subscription back so it will be good value.

Lets be honest here. 20 a month is ok.

But it doesnt change that rngs are used on these sites as well.

Rengs that are made for corrupt poker sites.

That target pocket pairs and better players.

Ive been all these sites mentioned.

Spadeclub was infested with cheaters .And power poker club.

This bunch all knows each other and messenger while playing more than you think. Its really bad.

There is no fair games.

The hands goto the large stack .

And you have nitwits thinking and talkign about how you play kk or aa on a corrupt programed rng.

Now i ddint say the sites themselves are corrupt. Less they are one hire own programers. But the software or rng source code is programed for speed and profit.

I'm playing there right now, and the software is buggy as hell. I just saw a pot chopped with 2 players with a flush but 1 had a dominating Q high to the other dudes min-flush. I don't know how to call support or even how to retrieve the hand.

I've played a bit there the last couple of days. I haven't seen anything buggy like described above. The interface is pretty crappy though. I have to have at least 6 tourneys going or I get bored, and the way it indicates it's your turn is just not nearly as obvious as it is (was) on Stars and FTP. Also, when it's your turn, the table does pop to the front, but if it becomes your turn on another table, it pops that table in front of the one you haven't yet acted on. So it's basically very difficult to play more than say 2 tourneys at a time.

The Elimination Blackjack tournaments are kinda fun as a change of pace, though.

Just FYI guys. I signed up an account with WPT for my wife. I figured it was more cost effective to pay $20 month than to keep her Pacific Poker account funded. She cashed $20 in a tournament and when we tried to withdraw it were informed that they, were deducting 30% of the winnings to with hold for US taxes. We are both costa rican citizens and provided passport and proof of address. I was informed that they with hold 30% of all cash winnings by non us residents for tax purposes. This makes no sense to me. So the US gets 30% off the top on my winnings and then I pay taxes again on what I receive here? I cancelled the membership immediately and regret that I have paid them even one months membership. I don't know if I will see my $14 or not. ($20 winnings minus 30% withholding) I'm glad I discovered this sooner rather than later

This is not how withholding works. Nor is it an accurate way to think about how you calculate poker tax in relation to withdrawals.

The absolute the worst poker site online. Game freezes, and if you pay just month to month, its 24.95 per month. Tell me your not losing money. Graphics suck. Their from the 90's as is there programmer. don't waste your money. America's card room or Bet Online are OK for US players. $50 min deposit.

I seem to remember when I signed up for this a few years ago they had a fat client where you could open multiple tables. Now it seems you can only play online and can only play one table at a time. Is this indeed the case?
