What's up nation? I have a question. If I want to calculate my average profit in STTs, is this calculation right?
Let's say I play 10 tournaments. Each has a buy-in of 1,5$.
10x1,5$= 15$
First place pays 5,95$
Second place pays 3,56$
Third place pays 2,37$
That makes average payout when ITM = (5,95$+3,56$+2,37$) / 3 = 3,96$
So being 40% ITM means you win 10×3,96$×0,4=15,84$
Then profit=15,84$-15$=0,84$ (???)

Im confused 😅
Please explain and add the calculation for ROI%
Thanks twoplustwo community!

ROI is simply total prizes/total buyins expressed as a percentage

So your average profit is your ROI * buyin

If prizes<buyins then your ROI will be negative and so will your average profit

As for your calculation, whatever it is, you're assuming that each finishing position is equally likely, whereas a good player will have his ITM finish distribution weighted towards having more 1st place finishes.

The ITM% only tells a bit of the story. For HU tournaments the ITM and ROI are obviously directly linked but if the number of entrants > 2 you need to know the distribution of your finishes to relate your ITM to ROI.

For example if 10% of the field cashes and you cash 20% of the time you might think you expect a profit but if those are all mincashes you obviously lose money at quite a big rate. This happens often when you fold your way to a tiny stack and then have no shot at finishing high.

In general the ITM% is worthless without having data to put it into context so instead of focusing on that look for information on ICM and useful stuff in SNGs.

ROI = Profit/investment

In this case that is $0.84/$15.00 = +5.6%

You’re paying over 20% rake so even though you are ITM 40%, which is way above average for a full table game, your ROI is less than 6% assuming you finish equally first, second, third when ITM.

This doesn't differ much from 10% rake, though.

In a standard 9-handed 10+1 format (pays 45/27/18)

Play 100 STTs = $1,100 invested

ITM 39% (13 each for 1st, 2nd & 3rd) you cash $1,170

$70/$110 = +6.36%
