Multi tabling or single/low tables when trying to move up? Multi tabling or single/low tables when trying to move up?

I'm a bit torn on the subject and looking for opinions. Many say to beat the micros, stay tight and just value bet. Is it therefore better to nit up and multi table? Or is it more profitable to make reads and exploit players while going for thinner value.

Thanks

It depends how well you can multi table. Obviously the less tables you play, the more money you will make per hand, but if you multi table, you can play a larger number of hands.

For example, if you win 10bb/100 on one table and 3bb/100 on 5 tables, you will make more money in the long run while multi tabling.

I am a fan of playing fewer tables while moving up if only to protect your 'roll. As you have success and build confidence and your BR grows add more tables. If you get crushed your BR wont be as destroyed as it would if you were playing your standard number of tables at your current stakes, so you can move back down and build it back ready to take another shot.

Can't say more than this.

If you are still learning the basics, then playing less tables and focussing on what you are doing and making more +EV plays and less mistakes is definately better.

If you feel you are beating the level and are capable of playing the next one up, but it's only your BR that's stopping you, then sure add some tables to boost your winrate.

You will play 'worse' because you can't possibly concentrate as well as you do playing 1 or 2 tables, but tiling tables will help you keep track of the action better if you feel that's what you need.

I'd recommend adding one extra table at a time. See how it goes. It took me a while to play more than 2 tables successfully, so give it a go and see how it's affecting your game/winrate, but be prepared to go back to less tables if it's not working for you.

Good luck!

This so much. I got into a terrible habit of playing way too many tables and I just stopped improving. It was terrible.

When you start to notice yourself rushing decisions, then you need to cut back.

Depends on what you feel like. When you're at the nanos, you have to accept that poker is very unlikely to provide even a side source of income for you. So when playing 2NL/4NL, just do what you enjoy most.

That said, I feel it's possible to tangibly 'improve' playing up to 4 tables, but we can fine-tune a generic strategy playing more.

This. Strictly talking about moving up, why not play 2 tables for the first couple thousands hands while getting a grasp for the new level and gain a little history on your new opponents( some of which may be the same). Then add tables as your comfort level increases.
