1000$ bankroll

Hello, I have read post from here from time to time. This is my first time create a id. I used to play 6$ sng's on fulltilt, but for the last year been playing 1/2 nl live in casinos as a hobby. I have always been good at math and am a very logical person, which i think is one of the reasons im drawn to poker.

I want to give poker a shot and try to make alot of money. The smallest stakes I can play is 1/2 nl live tho. The most money I can come up with is 1k from what I have read is that it is way to low of a bankroll for 1/2. But looking at it, its 5 buyins.

Any advice or tips related to br or anything in general would be much apreciated.

Re: 1000$ bankroll

1) Live poker and online poker are two very different things! Games are harder online, you'll find NL2 tables harder than 1/2 live (ok, maybe I'm exaggerating but, at least on stars, you can find NL5 nit-infested tables harder that those 1/2 live)

2) Wanna make a lot of money? That's not the correct mindset, this is not just a deposit-and-get-rich thing, online poker is harder than you think.

3) You don't necessarily need $1k. I started with a $50, other started with less, some even started from scratch. If you have those $1k available I'd advice you to deposit just 1/4 of it ($250) and see how it goes, just for you to get a feeling about online poker...

4) if you want to play 1/2 straight ahead with $1k you'll get crushed, don't do it. 5 BI is not a good BRM for those stakes

Set a budget. Unless you are a proven winning player (say, beating 25nl online for a couple of hundred thousand hands), then set a budget.

If you are an established winning cash player, then you could use a ss system to get your roll up while limiting risk, but I gather you are not, so it's budget time.

Re: 1000$ bankroll

This depends on how confident you are as a player.. Winning so far? Breaking even? etc
If winning:
Play NL50 until you lose like 4 buyins in which case you should drop down to NL25 until you make 1k again
If breaking even:
Play NL25
If losing/unknown:
Play NL10

Tournament wise, play in tournies under $10

Re: 1000$ bankroll

online you'll play alot faster and multi-table therefore increasing your overall swings.

You can easily have a 5 buy-in+ losing session. Where live you may just leave if you lose one or two buy-ins.

Live play comes down to reads and tells, where online it's more mechanical. You need to play alot more hands to win imo. Start off playing 50nl maybe building up a few tables and then see how you go.

Good luck

Everyone saying to play NL this or that, the dude is American and sounds like he only has live as an option - 1/2.

[QUOTE=DIGG;33034884]
I want to give poker a shot and try to make alot of money.

If this is your goal it ain't gonna happen.
First and foremost you need to work on and improve your game and that needs to be #1 priority. Results-- a lot of money-- may come afterwards, most likely not. Everyone that plays would like to make a lot of money. You're new to the game comparatively. What makes you think you can or will win a lot?! Especially off the bat.
5 BIs isn't enough to play live or online. A couple bad sessions and you're through. Then what?
Rethink your plan and have a back-up.
Don't mean to be discouraging, just trying to get you to be realistic.
Good luck.

Re: 1000$ bankroll

I'm in no position to be an authority on poker...but if you want to play online, maybe you should work your way from the bottom. Start at the micros to get a feel for the pace and play of online. I've played live for a few years and actually just now decided to put a $100 into Merge (american player). If anything, I would be treating it like a "practice" account (not to say I wouldn't take it seriously) since I don't want to put my entire roll onto an American site with the laws as shaky and vague as they are right now.

edit: nvm you were asking about live play.

1k isnt enough for 200nl live or online, play as a hobby try bink some tournaments boost your roll until you have 20-25bi for the stake you wish to play. while your playing as a hobby learn/study and get in a crap load of knowledge. GL

This.
Why so much advice about online when he clearly states live 1/2 play?
OP, maybe the b&m forum is better for this.

Re: 1000$ bankroll

I'll give this a shot

How much money are you willing to lose in a single session? It should be an amount that you can easily shrug off if you do lose it. That amount varies from person to person. The reason to do this is because it must not affect your life or future poker sessions when you do lose. And you can lose quite a few times in a row...

Basically put , you should play with a portion of your bankroll that you can afford losing a few times in a row. One tenth? One twentieth? I personally play cash games with only 1/50 of my bankroll. I'd recommend the smallest portion possible until you get more experience and know you are a winning player ( this can take awhile). Play at stakes where you don't care to lose a couple of BIs but are happy when you win some.

Ex : I have 1K bankroll to play cash games and am willing to lose 1/50 , wich represents 20$ (Always buy-in for the max amount) , therefore I will play at theses 20$ cash game stakes until I build my total bankroll up to 50x the next lvl ( if next lvl is 30$ max buy-in I'll need 1.5K). If you lose money right off the bat , you'll have to drop down in stakes accordingly.

Last advice would be to study the game more than you play it for now.

Good luck!

1. OP is clearly talking about playing live. Please no more 25NL and multi-tabling suggestions.

2. OP, you say you have been playing 1/2 - what are your results so far ?
