I have been playing for a couple years now and average about $90-$100 per hour at the 1/2 games I play. Is this a good rate to be achieving? Should I consider playing $2/$5 now that I have built up some semblance of a bankroll?

Thanks!

Post seems very trolly but would need more information. I'm assuming it's live. how many hours have you played? What is your bankroll?

The highest winrate I've ever heard of at live 1/2 is over $40/hr. If you are making $20/hr over a reasonable sample size then you are crushing it. The vast majority of players that are making over $20/hr don't actually have a significant sample size and most are likely losing players in the long run.

if you're going at $100/hour then 100 hours of play will get you $10k which is more than enough for 2/5. you would've played more than 100 hours in 2 years if you play regularly

Why move up when you can just crush 1/2 for an easy hundo per hour? Stick with it IMO.

If you play regularly you should have near 100k roll saved up now. Just skip 2/5 and go crush 10/20 for $1000/hour.

All of you are wrong. OP needs go to Macau and play $1k/$2k cash games with Tom Dwan.

i was playing with a guy who suggested i start using a poker tracker because i told him over the past 6 months or so i thought i was around $70-$80 per hour and he called total BS on me. so i started tracking myself and this is from 12 consecutive sessions. so i only have been "officially" tracking myself over the past month or so as i play fairly irregularly and more as a hobby. guess it sounds too good to be true based on the comments here. i'll keep at it for another couple months or so and see if things "even-out" to a more normal rate. perhaps i'll play some at 2-5, but i just haven't played there yet as i didn't want to buy in for 500 at a time.
thanks for the replies!

I don't know why you would want to tell anyone what you think your win rate is at the table you're playing at... seems so wrong.

oh Dream Catcher, yes this is all live. i play just a little online and am up about 800 playing $.50/$1 but that has taken a long time to get there. the live is based on about 80 hours of play so ive made about $7500 (in that time) over the past month.

sil3, yes prob very true, it was an old dude i was being friendly with and he was badgering me about tracking my play so i caved and told him info i wouldn't usually share. but, yes, there it is. i avoid talking about it in person since then, but thought it might be worth checking with players on here...

$1/$2 could be beatable for < $0/h or > $40 depending on the game. Some games have stacks that basically make then $2/$5 games and if players are willing to gamble the blinds don't matter that much. Or it could be a bunch of nits with less than $60 in front of them and you lose to rake.

I've played at tables where my estimated hourly is well over $50/h, it wasn't in a casino and those are very rare. On average though, playing only in the casino with moderate game selection, $25/h is doable if you're the best player by a big margin. Basically you need to be playing at tables where in your eyes other players are so incompetent they could be throwing feces at each other at any point in time to sustain winrates of $40/h+ at $1/$2.

$100/h at $1/$2, not possible unless you're playing with severe coma survivors or something like that.

haha i literally laughed out loud when i read your post.

perhaps i have just been running really good the past month but i do feel many of the players i have been seeing at this casino are pretty poor players. has been very easy just to sit on the worst player's left who got lucky and built a stack, and just wait for a hand to stack them. that's pretty much all i have been doing. i suppose i do need a larger sample of playing though. i'll keep tracking through dec/jan when i get to play a bit more and let you know. i'm pretty confident i was 80/hr prior to this guy getting on my case about tracking myself. definitely at the $90 the past 80 hrs of 1/2 play.

Wait for the times where they get lucky and destroy you for 4 buy ins in a day when you do everything right. Those swings quickly offset your hourly.

And I've had a stretch where I lost $60/h for over 400 hours, although in slightly larger games. Just saying 80 hours is a very small sample.

Your not making 100 dollars a hour playing 1/2 if you think that your setting your self up for disaster. You would have to play for a year to even consider a reliable win rate at live games. What you have going right now is positive variance your good hands are getting paid off your running great and playing great. It's going to end soon and when it does your real skill will come out right now your overconfident keep playing 1/2 for 6 months and see what your win rate is.

Because none of it is true and it's a positive variance high that's going to crash down on broke street.

Well ive been playing on and off for the past 6 months or so. Have played 2/5 when i can and rate is still great. About $75/hour so yes less than the 90 i posted last oct. Still just a fun hobby for me but aftet playing a lot more i can see how those that responded were in disbelief. Sooooooo many terrible players at every room! Prob hard to believe anyone new is actually successful. 98% of everyone playing this game is terrible or just wants to gamble. All you have to do is wait for a big hand and put in your stack. So easy. Learning more about the game and really enjoying it. Good luck/skill to all!
