Video Poker (Jacks or Better) Question..

Both situations below cost the same bet-wise. (A) will probably hit a royal flush before (B) since you would playing more hands. However, (B) will pay more once it finally hits because you're playing at a higher denomination. Which is the better option and why?

A) Playing 4 hands of $0.25 max bet (5 coin)
B) Playing 1 hand of $1 max bet (5 coin)

Re: Video Poker (Jacks or Better) Question..

A is going to give you less variance per $ played. B is going to let you play through $x much faster. So it depends how you define "better", that term means different things to different people. For example, for someone playing VP for the purposes of earning a Diamond card at a CET property - if time is a factor, B is better; if they want their results to be as close to EV as possible, A is better.

Thanks for your reply Lattimer! I should have specified in the post what I meant by "better" - basically, which offers the better EV.

I think casino establishments have started doing both slots and VP by the amount spent. So, on a slot it may be 1 point for every $5 spent and in VP it may be 1 point for every $10 spent. In that case, you'd be earning the same in terms of player points?

My question was mainly, if I'm playing and wanting to give myself the best possible return from a value aspect, which is the better choice and you said A. That answers my question, thank you!

That assumes they have the same payable (lower denoms often have worse pay tables) among other things.

Return is going to be the same. EV is only determined by the paytable. The rest is just adjusting variance.

This would be assuming both games had the same pay table (full pay 9/6). So, neither beats the other aside from having to look through more hands in one?

Correct, they are the same from an EV perspective (assuming same pay table).
