Re: Tipping at the craps table

any corrolation in the amount of money tipped when betting for the dealers or just handing it over?

IE is a player willing to tip more if its a gamble, rather than just throwing money straight down into the box?

For some reason with 0 investigating I have a feeling players may be a bit looser in tipping if its a bet for the dealers, which outweights the -EV

Dealers like action -- when they have no action they're just dealing, and have little if any interest in the game. I tip in dollars, a dollar at a time, and only make hop bets for them -- always on something I hope will hit. This is usually $25 - 40 an hour -- a dollar at a time, only on bets that pay 15 or 30 to 1. They don't ever want me to leave, and it only takes one minor advantageous resolution or deviation an hour to (more than) cover the cost. I also switch between front and back play between shooters, which helps that along. Dealers love getting tips -- they live on them -- but they're really only interested in the next one, not the last one.

I generally flat tip and don't gamble for the dealer. But it's really to the choice of the tipper.
Because they have a chance to make a bigger tip.

If I'm running well I will make a bet "for the boys" and then also tip after I color up to leave.

If a point is hit, put $5 on the pass for the next comeout...

Re: Tipping at the craps table

Tipping a hot shooter is fun too. I was playing at the Flamingo one night and this kid got the dice and hammered it for prolly about 45 minutes or so. The only time he ever rolled a 7 was after he had cleared his pass line point. Kid made me about 1200. When he finally 7'd out, I colored up, tipped the dealers about 70 bucks or so and broke the kid off a black chip. He thought it was the coolest thing ever. I had helped him back up a couple of his pass line bets too with more odds, he only had like $50 he was playing with betting $5 at a time.

Re: Tipping at the craps table

I dealt craps for 4 years in the early 90's. My feelings were as follows...

I would much rather have you make a bet for the dealers than just toss it in unless you are done playing. You are taking care of us and we want you to win. Wagering the tip on a bet that you have for yourself shows that we're with you and builds a camaraderie between the player and the dealers.

With that said, some players are superstitious and don't want to make a bet for the dealer and want any tip dropped immediately. We're cool with that too.

The bottom line is that a large percentage of players don't tip. If you choose to tip the dealers there is no wrong way to do it and any dealer should be appreciative.

Also, for those asking about passline bets and not taking odds for the dealer. Don't feel cheap. Again, you are tipping, while many are not and it is appreciated. Any dealer that makes you feel cheap for not giving them odds doesn't deserve any tip at all.

Regarding odds on he 6-8, when I play craps and bet a $1 line bet for the dealers, I'll give them $2 odds on the 4-5-9-10 and if the point is 6 or 8 I'll give them $1-$2 on the hard 6 or 8, but no odds. Craps dealers understand the game and they understand that you may not want to go $5 on the odds, but that you also don't want them to only get even money either.

Very rarely I have been toked when I was shooting and on a roll. I assume the dealers hate this if they are not also being toked. If this happens I might make a dealer bet and make some kind of comment such as, "Let's let the dealers in on the action."

Last week some rich **** walked up to a blackjack table where I was sitting, bought in for $20,000, and offered me $100 to leave the table! I graciously accepted.

Re: Tipping at the craps table

Wish I didn't tip the dealers on craps but I do it for good karma and superstitious. I tip more then I should. But typically bet 90% on hard # and 10% for dealers.

Re: Tipping at the craps table

Every dealer I've met wants in on the action. My personal experience -- I overtip like a mother****er at the craps table; usually depends on how many singles I have in my rack; if it's 2, I'll do a 2-way yo, 3 and I'll hop the sevens for them, none and I'll throw out a red and do both (this is like once every 4-5 shooters, plus every other one of my own come outs).

If I'm shooting, I'll throw a nickel up on the hard way for them if the point is even, or put them on the line if I make one and start up another come out, maybe 6 and 8 too.

Re: Tipping at the craps table

I am a TG dealer and im in the minority in that id rather just have it in the box. I am aware that all bets are long term losers and it irritates me when decent people are trying to tip and end up just giving it to the house. I do the same when i play elsewhere, Im happy to just toss $5 in the box when my own $5 hardway hits or if a point hits or at random points in a hot roll may just toss in $10, and ill try to plan ahead if im coloring up $300 ill try to leave with 322 or something and just toss in the spare change. I dont hate the action bets at all, just a personal preference for me

Preferred a straight toke if asked also. Especially where tips are pooled, obviously fewer -EV gambles in tokes over the week the higher the toke rate is. But certainly appreciated either way, and some dealers seem to like it.

That's why I usually try to make it on a good bet even though it's not the coolest thing to do. Heck, there are even +EV dealer bets most policies allow on some table games.
