You are correct, if you play 999 hands an hour the IRS classifies you as a hobbyist.

But I met a guy in Tunica a few months ago that was one and he had been doing it for 30 years! He grinded a dollar APDW machine (99.96% return) while I grinded quarters. He really hadn't looked at internet resources like vpfree2, vpgenius and Wizard of Odds. But he been grinding for so long, he knows where the best machines are. He said he did VP math before the calculator era. He described the huge swings (he lost $800 that night, which was nothing to him, over ~6 hours while I lost $180 over the same time frame), and basically travels to various Midwest, Gulf Coast casinos to grind out comps. He is a Caesars Seven Stars. I didn't ask him exactly how much he typically made, but I am guessing it's < $50k if I had to guess, probably like ~$20k. He probably made more in the past when more casinos had better video poker. Video poker as a true advantage game is dying off.

It should be obvious that you make more than 70% of whatever someone playing 1000 hands an hour makes if you play 700. I say more because your accuracy will be greater.

Bob Dancer has a great website with a blog that you can read about the Vegas video poker grinders. He is a millionaire so he probably makes six figures.

he does make money but I do not think much of it comes from VP any more. He has books, software, website, radio show and teaches.

Saw Bob Dancer at the Palms again today, he is always there. He dresses like a homeless person for some reason. Just about every time they have a drawing there he is drawn as one of the winners. I usually see him banging out the 100 hand .25 cent bonus poker machines in the back by Gardunos.

He is probably a cheap ****; any true video poker grinder is, imo. I guess he usually hits it because he has the most volume of the drawing pool? And just bonus only? Without Quick Quads or Super Times Pay, I would think that would be a too ****ty machine for him. It's still 0.83% to the casino. But grinding out volume for the promotion might be worth it...

Yep, finally played that full pay JoB STP at the Blue Chip for the first time for max credits. 99.82% long term return for JoB with the bonus bet, but down about $120 at quarters for a single line over ~2 hours. I started off with about 50 hands straight without a multiplier (1 in 15 chance on average). My biggest win was a boat with a 4x multiplier. But the guy next to me was max betting a 10/6 DB STP machine (99.16% with perfect strategy, which he definitely did not do) and got dealt quad queens for 2500 quarters total over ten lines! I often run like this on the best paying machines.
