I've been playing poker for a few years but now I'm done with it. I like the grind but I do not have a good enough mindset to handle the variance. Therefore, I'm looking at other games that I can enjoy more and that can earn you a bit of cash on the side if you're good at it.

In the past I used to play Magic: The Gathering and I was able to make some money by grindin' the online tournaments on magic online (like 2000$ a year playing 3 hours each day on average). I'm not sure that is still possible nowadays.

I know sports betting is a thing if you're good at it. Backgammon is still a game that is played online? Can you make money by playing Hearthstone or stuff like that? Is Chess a thing? What other games are out there that I never heard of?

You can make a living off chess but you'd have to be like top 20 in the world. I'd bet my whole bankroll against that ever happening within this lifetime.

There is this verb (it might actually be a noun) I heard of called work.

I have a job and I'm happy with it, I want something that can be played as an hobby and make me some extra cash.

He didn't say "make a living."

I think it's fairly straightforward to make a recreational amount of money at bridge. Backgammon and chess are a little harder because of travel expenses (tournaments have more pros and are spaced further apart).

Online Daily Fantasy Sports is probably a billion times better than sports betting because of rake issues and the sheer amoubt of fishy money going in right now.

Would you make it worth my while to prove how idiotic this statement is?

I'm not sure if this counts as a "game", but learning a programming language can get you some side income with some practice.

Any online game with a resource can be traded from money, but usually only via the black market. MMPORG's are the obvious option. I wouldn't have thought Hearthstone was a good choice.

If you can deal with the game protection aspect WOW is probably the best option right now: bot up a bunch of characters and run garrison missions probably the easiest way. A lot of work to make money but you said you wanted to grind....

P2P games like you describe really stink as a vehicle for hourly earnings. You need some massive bureaucratic structure with a ton of cash that doesn't care about people creaming their profits off the top.

You could dedicate your life to RTS like DOTA or Smite and make a decent living for a 17 year old

As a MTG player i dont believe anyone can make sustainable ROI by playing online tournements. The 'rake' is really huge. If you want to make money off MTG, be a featured writer in a big team.

For other games it depends on whether you can play skill games against opponents that you can beat consistently. Mahjong/chess/backgammon/pool/stock market whatever you have the edge.

I think you can find Hearthstone tournaments online with prizemoney in them.

Another suggestion would be to run a youtube/twitch channel of you playing and earn a bit of money from ads.

I've made a quarter of a million dollars over the past 13 years playing skill games on sites like worldwinner.com and royalgames.com. Highly recommended!
