Kevin,
It is possible to play JOB 9/6 at +EV. What denomination are we talking about? If dollars, the jackpot would need to be around $4900 to be at break-even EV, 50-cents, around $2450, and 25-cents around $1225 (assuming I did my math correctly
)
Now, JOB is probably the easiest game to learn and is one of the best out there to gain an edge because of this, however, it is not the best game as far as EV goes... Full Pay Deuces wild will return 100.77% with optimal strategy, 10/7 Double Bonus gives 100.17%, and some other games can be positive such as Full Pay Double Joker Poker. The difference in these games is the variance is higher and the strategies are tougher to learn.
As for whether or not it is worth it, that depends on you.. depending on the casino, you can make it worth your while. Some casinos give great comps/cashback, and some don't. You will have to do some research as to which one gives you the most.
I don't make it to Atlantic City as much as I used to, but I stayed on the +EV side with video poker for many years and made quite a bit of money with it. The problem is, unless you hit the royal flushes as expected (approx 40,000 hands for JOB) your EV will not be positive. For 3 years straight, I got very lucky with royals, hitting on average, one per 25,000 hands (plus I hit a few on multiplier games which in one case made it worth 8 times the amount..)
What made the difference for me in the long run was playing as perfect strategy as I could, and taking advantage of cashback and bonus cash as much as possible. I lived very close to AC, so I usually went 4 days per week and ran through a couple hundred through video poker machines each time. I was getting around $700/month in cashback, and around the same $700 in bonus dollars (which need to be wagered to cash out.) With that free $1400, it was like an extra bankroll to play with. Other things that you can consider +EV is the free food you will earn, the free rooms, and also giveaways (I know, most of it is crap, but hey, that is what eBay is for!)
Learn the strategies, find a casino that gives you the most cashback/comps, and you can definitely make some money playing VP assuming you play with near perfect strategy. Keep in mind though, it is a grind, and will not make you rich unless you can afford to play the highest denominations like some of the VP pros out there. I could have never quit my job for it, and considered it my "shopping" income (i.e. my TV, laptop, living room set, etc..)
