It is my understanding that some casinos will overcomp some games. E.g. They will comp a blackjack game at an inferred 1.5% edge when playing basic strategy is actually only a 0.5% edge; or they will comp all video poker the same regardless of pay table. But I can't imagine this is true of baccarat, since the house edge is so obvious and consistent.
This is all accurate, or at least was the last time I was able to fact check it.
They usually gave blackjack comps using a 2% edge; back when games were 3:2 S17 it was quite possible to break even playing BS and with a small spread like 1:2 or just Wonging out on negative counts, you could have infinite longevity.
It was also easier to manipulate the system, it was the pit boss's job to estimate your average play, if you bet 75% 1 unit and 25% 2 units, you would get estimated at an average bet of 1.5-2 units. Coupled with a few bathroom breaks to lower your hands/hr, some claimed you could profit from BS alone.
Over the past 20 years as casinos became more corporate, they've tended to realign comp levels with measurable metrics. Also basic strategy guides are far more available and I wouldn't be surprised if the actual hold from blackjack is closer to the theoretical EV.
