I think it would be interesting to see what kind of $$ people around the country (USA) pay for rent. A quick description of the kind of area you live in would help.

2 bedroom apt in NYC: $1350/month + utilities, electric, etc.

I don't think you can find a smaller space for more money anywhere else in the world...

That is pretty cheap for most desirable cities. Even if you assume it is a tiny two bedroom that isn't much at all.

typesh do you mean your share of the rent is 1350 or the entire rent for the 2 bedroom is 1350?

Fortunately free right now, but here in Austin, TX rents are the highest they have ever been, averaging about $850 for a 1-bedroom I believe.

Pricing downtown (highest costing area obv.) is about $2.50-$3.00 per sq. ft., so your small (650 sq.ft) 1 bedroom in a high rise downtown will be in the $1,600-$2,000 range.

Like 3.50k a month in Chicago

I probably should have mentioned that is my share of the rent. $2700/month total.

Paid 1500/mo + utilities in NYC (Murray hill) but lived with 7 other people in a 5 story brownstone.

Paid 750/mo + utilities in Henderson (basically vegas) lived alone.

About to rent a 3 bedroom house in Vegas for 1140/mo total (lol) and live with someone else.

I live in a relatively nice suburb 10 minutes north of Boston. A decent equation for rent for a unit in my area is:

Total Rent = $700 + $500*number of bedrooms

Utilities not included.

I lived all over the north side for six years. Wrigleyville, Lakeview, Lincoln Park, etc.

I paid between $900-$1200 for a 1 bedroom in that time.

Its only slightly below market for small ones past 150th street or so. You can find even cheaper ones in older buildings. Apartments on the fifth floor without elevator access can be great bargains if you like walking.

.... But a lot of people wouldn't even consider 150th street nyc.

2500 to 3000 minimum if you want to stay near the shopping and nightlife centres
