There is close to $1,000,000,000 in alltcoins. While it is certainly very speculative and full of crap, there is probably some money to be made. I would guess in twelve months the market cap of altcoins will be higher than that and further, that the top ten altcoins have a higher concentration of the money than they do now.
Almost all is in Ripple, which isn't really a coin, and almost all is privately held by creators and released if the value goes up. It's like I could sell you a TomCollinsCoin for $.0000001 and keep 1 trillion of them and have a huge market cap.

The market for alt-coins, based on what is actually available, is incredibly small, and shrinking in the pure junk ones, and the ones that are actually innovative are making up the bulk. That and Litecoin and Dogecoin. Dogecoin has some legs and bark, but only because it's a toy.

Maybe I'm beyond crazy but I actually just bought a (tiny!) amount of Mazacoin. It was too ridiculous for me to not take a tiny stake.

Anyone have any actual thoughts? Does this have a chance of legal standing based on tribal laws? I wouldn't know where to start...

I can't even open the mazacoin wallet. I downloaded the Linux version, selected 'allow to execute as a program' under permissions, still nothing.

Not including Ripple, Arora, or Mastercoin the top 6-7 coins get you to over 700m in market cap.

While the market cap of altcoins is smaller than it was months ago, so it bitcoin's, and altcoins have seen explosive growth as a whole since October or so of last year and that growth has not been entirely reclaimed, not even close. I agree with your second paragraph except for the first part of the first sentence.

But don't get too excited, it doesn't come with a group of people who can on their own whim decide when the inflation happens and by how much and who gets the money.

Inflation as a hard rule built into the protocol is really the same thing as a fixed supply (other than rewarding the mining/distribution process forever now). Everyone always knows that the supply will increase by X amount (which is different than the inflation you're usually talking about, where selected people expand it at all the right times or whatever), so the expansion is always priced in in the first place, no effect actually follows from the "inflation" happening, it may as well be static and have saved the marketplace a little math.

I know you're joking.. but not sure on which level.

Ayn Rand coin.

Have an IPO where coins can be bought for 10000 AYNs for 1 BTC. After a period of 3 months, the market closes. From that point on 1% annual inflation and POS (high transaction fees 1 AYN to start adjusted to about $0.25). The 1% inflation goes to a single persons address for protection of the coin. The owner of this address will use funds to fight fraud, pay programmers, police actions, and offer rewards. For example pay a reward for someone that keeps a dedicated client open 24-7, puts up exchange, digital artwork, advertisements, political candidates, or promotes Ayn Rand in general.

Now you say Ayn Rand did not support taxes. However, she did for defense and to support the courts. However, the group that controls the code could change the address of the leader as long as they support the Ayn Rand and the coin. If the leader goes wild.

The idea we have to pay so much to miners is a waste of resources.

David Andolfatta VP Federal Reserve STL comments on Ripple

it's finally getting out there: http://www.stlouisfed.org/dialogue-w...in-3-31-14.pdf

Quote:
"There is (in my view) room for beneficial coexistence; for example:
A politically independent Fed operating an “elastic” currency supply with congressionally assigned mandates (e.g., price-level stability).
Together with Ripple, a currency-agnostic P2P payment system to facilitate low-cost payments." - David Andolfatto VP Federal Reserve St. Louis
Quote:
"In the U.S., the IRS has recently ruled that, for tax purposes, bitcoins will be treated as property and not a currency.
I.e., when you buy then sell bitcoins, you must report the resulting capital gain/loss. Compliance means added record-keeping costs.
The effect of this and similar rulings serve to diminish the attractiveness of bitcoins as a currency. (Ripple a winner?)" - David Andolfatto

Not sure where to ask this but..what's going on with this trezor thing. Seems like a very easy solution to the whole security problems. I can't seem to buy one anywhere..?

Any idea of the price and if they're available yet?

Please stop, its absolutely unbearable. Ripple isn't even remotely in the same realm as decentralized currencies, it really needs its own thread, so I'd say go create one and spam in there nonstop.

funny, tradefortress, the guy who owns ripplescam.org is also known to have scammed some people in the bitcoin community.

"Hello everyone,
Today I am very upset because bitcointalk.org user TradeFortress stole 30 BTC.
Here is how it happened.
He was running an online wallet called inputs.io. The website was hacked on October 26 and 4100 BTC were stolen. Inputs.io was insolvent from that moment on. However, instead of shutting down, he kept the site open and looking normal. He was accepting new deposits after the hack... continued"

source: http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comm..._30_of_my_btc/

he is against ripple from the very beginning. don't know why, because ripple is a really great piece of technology.

Cause it's terrible and trying to piggyback on the Bitcoin press and it's full of marketeers who constantly spam crap.

My favorite Ripple story is when they were offering some free ripple at a conference to people who set up a wallet on their phone. Guy tries to do it, the entire app crashes. Solid product they got!
