I'm going to come into this thread. I'm a 22 year old college student and I recently got hired as a teller at Bank of America earlier this year. I worked a few restruant jobs since I was 17 and wanted to work for a bank because it is a bit more in line with my major. I am about halfway done with getting my bachelors in accounting but I'm considering changing my major to finance. I want to take my job as far as it will go, moving up within the company to become a PB soon and later a financial analyst or a business banker for mass affluent clients. Is there any advice you guys can give me so I can make the most out of my position? Thanks

Hi Zachreh,

Good luck in your career path. Just a few things to consider depending how long you have been in banking. Retail banking is often a revolving door for PB's and tellers, if you land the better jobs you are only as good as your last months numbers. I heard some stories of employees who do not mind being an Assistant Manager but as you know it carries with it a lot of work, business banker sounds very appealing just make sure you bring in NEW business on a constant basis. My advice after graduating apply for jobs with more of a career path and not in retail banking. Good luck whatever you choose.

Do not change you major to finance. There isn't a finance job that you can't get with an accounting degree. Accounting gives you way more options and stay away from Econ degrees in general if you want to be in finance/ accounting.

Thanks for the help guys, I'm considering moving to merchant services with Bank of America in the near future then taking on higher positions within that area after I graduate. I know everyone and their grandmother has business degrees. I do find being a financial analyst appealing however I can't help but assume that it's an office job with little people interaction. I do think I have a great personality and I am developing my sales skills which is why I'm leaning toward the business/merchant service side, I just want to know which direction will get me the most money

Good Luck. If you do not hit your goals I assume they let you go? But that is with any sales job I take it.

Merchant services is a very competitive market. Unless you are in a densely populated market tough to make big money.

Everyone and their mother doesn't have an accounting degree and that opens way more doors.

I realize this post was from like 9 months ago, but there's really very little money in commercial banking. It's a really dumb way to go, especially if you have good sales skills. If you enjoy selling and like working in a big corporate environment, you should beg / borrow / steal your way into commercial real estate. Even the morons at a place like CBRE make 150k a year after their first few years. The superstars make millions. Good luck doing that in commercial banking.

I think that selling cars or selling life insurance are both better options than becoming a retail "banker"
