Meh, I thought the wine guy was right on as to where the value of the company was. So hard to tell without seeing the specifics of the business plan he alluded to, but I suspect he was right in turning it down.

Unless he was going to be guaranteed 0-fee rights to use the patent in his own bottling operation it didn't make sense.

Granted, he never even asked for that, so whatever. Probably just wanted 10 minutes of national TV time.

i thought this too, then I realized kevin could just turn around and make Copa de Vino guy pay whatever he wants for his own patent and technology.. basically whatever he would get from major wine producers or bottlers Copa would have to match.

Re: The Shark Tank

I thought the Copa guy was pretty sharp and really didn't have much intention of making a deal that wasn't 100% in his favor. I would think that he probably got a couple of very profitable calls from companies with an interest in licensing from him just from his appearance on the show. Was there no episode last night btw?

FWIW I listened to an interview with Daymond John and he said that only about 1 out of every 8 deals they make actually end up going through due to the contracts, some info being withheld, etc. Therefore he said they try to get as many as they can knowing that it's likely most won't go through.

For anyone who loves the Dragons Den and Shark Tank shows, there is also a UK version which is pretty good. In fact I enjoy the UK version the most. If you are ever bored and looking for something to watch, multiple seasons of the UK Dragons Den are on youtube.

no doubt. she sure shut up baldy when she said her sales figures. When that first guy offered 100k for 10 percent and wanted everyone else in, I said to my wife, "what shark goes on this show to go in with 4 other people. Grow a f'n pair and make a real offer."

Come back from commercial and Daymond does exactly that. Props to him.

You can watch old episodes on their site if you want more of the same.
grunch so apologies if it's been said - it's based on a BRITISH show called Dragons' Den, which is produced by a Japanese company who ran a similar show in Japan. There are versions of it in 20+ other countries, all of which are based on the UK format.

Hell yes! When I was in London in August I saw a wine glass with that pull off top from that vino guy (I assume licensed from him). I think it was at Marks & Spencer iirc. Looks like he did not need them after all.

douche factor 9.

daymond was a dick, too, as daymond often is.

i would find that so frustrating, to be making better offers and get turned down, twice. and not just to lose the deal, but to get your face rubbed in it.

Re: The Shark Tank

The Cuban/Robert dynamic is definitely interesting...I'm def curious to see how that plays out longterm both on the show and off.

I also find it interesting that these guys get so excited about some of the companies. A lot of them just seem really small and non scaleable. A lot of these companies, like the ezVIP one seems like maybe a 2.5-5m company if everything goes right. I'm just surprised that they seem to routinely go nuts over companies that have 5-10x upside potential, whereas most VC/angels are looking for 50-100x upside potential.

Would be curious for any guys with a vc background to weigh on that. Maybe I'm not valuing the upside properly but a lot of these are kinda crap companies, even if the pitchmen are charismatic or sharp.

Re: The Shark Tank

I think you'd be surprised how little VC/angel's make. It's only an average of about 30%, because more often than not they buy into failures. Furthermore, they are actually aiming for a 5-10x return not 50-100x. In fact, if it's close enough to exit, they'll take significantly less than 5x. Most of these shark deals already have proven sales. With the reduced risk, they don't need such a big payday when it hits. All they really need to do is beat the markets, so they would be ecstatic to be stuck with a mere "5-10x upside potential."

Though I have definitely seen deals made where there obviously wasn't much upside, I think the EZVIP has very good potential. No way they top out at 5m, if it's done right.

There's a number of other dynamics at play. Part of it is just a game. A lot of these deals never make it through due diligence, so what you see on the screen doesn't mean much; if you're a shark and you just sit there waiting for the big play, you're gonna get galfond'd; the sharks are there for ego, not to make money; they want to be seen making deals, both for the viewing audience and also the other sharks, etc., etc.

Re: The Shark Tank

I'd imagine a lot of the motivation comes from ego -- this isn't about making money so much as winning against the rest of the panel. There is also a marketing aspect to this -- Keven co-hosted a decent hour long financial show but after being on Dragon's Den he has 4-5 shows and a decent amount of press. That can't be bad for his funds -- on the business show he manages to mention them frequently and i don't watch his other shows but he likely manages to get in a mention on those as well.

Re: The Shark Tank

It's definately not ego or douchebaggery. It's just people trying to make things more interesting for the TV show they work for. And it works pretty well.
