An awesome show where entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to millionaires and billionaires and hope they get the finance.

Watching it was exciting because I felt like I was in the negotiation room myself. It's also a great learning experience.

Highly recommended.

Great show. It's a remake of a Canadian show called dragons den.

http://www.cbc.ca/dragonsden

You can watch old episodes on their site if you want more of the same.

The "contestants" give up a 2% royalty just to have the ability to pitch their business. The contestants rationalize this fee due to the free publicity.

Didnt realize this was the case, but it probably is worth the publicity. Pretty good deal for ABC (I assume they are the ones who collect this fee?)

I watched the first episode only because I follow Mark Cuban on twitter and he said he was going to live tweet his thoughts during the show. I thought it was pretty awesome, I have now added the show to my DVR lineup

the bald guy is great for the show but it's crazy how transparent his strategy of lowballing the **** out of everyone really is.

he literally throws out a crap offer and tries to pressure the person into accepting it ASAP. might just be for TV, but if not, it'd really turn me off from working with a guy like that.

like others have said, if you guys like the show you should watch dragons den on cbc instead. better done, more about the business, less about the people. Also the dragons have more use. A real estate investor? how is that helpful for VC?

Added the link to my bookmarks so I can watch it next week while "working" from home

I'm unable to watch the old episodes because I'm not from Canada. Any other way around this?

Have to agree...love this show! I liked the guy that Cuban replaced, but I think Cuban is a lot better for TV. Not sure the show would be quite as successful if the Sharks didn't have a great chemistry...love the banter.

Cuban is only a guest shark, I think he said he would be on 2-3 episodes, maybe its just a rotating seat this season

I watched an episode of Dragon's Den and while it was a great learning experience, I didn't have much fun watching it. And when something isn't fun for me, it's tough to pay attention to all the variables.

Cuban gives me that fun factor.

Spoiler:
I can't believe the nasal filter guy took the deal that was much worse than the deal Daymond offers. What do you guys think of walking away from the deal and calling up Daymond later to accept his original offer? It's clear these sharks want to be involved with his business.

What did you like about the guy Cuban replaced? I thought he was a boring nit -- he rarely made any deals. Aside from Cuban having a good personality what I like about Mark is that he's a wheeler dealer; he was even thinking about investing in the bacon alarm clock!

Have to laugh at the old Kevin O'Leary.

Meanwhile one of the most impressive pitches I have seen is below. I have seen more professional people negotiate, with a better business and where the Dragons (Sharks) are dying to get involved, but this guy deserves respect.

Two parts:

By the way, if anyone has any experience with the O'Leary Fund, I would like to hear. I heard that he sucks, but you should know better with that type of guy.

I believe I've mentioned on here before that my brother's girlfriend was on the show last year. The sharks loved her product and invested. If people are interested I'll ask her to come in this thread and post or start another thread to answer questions about the experience and events after.

Please do, I love this show and would love to hear about how the sharks actually factor into the growth and success of the business.

Also, for tonight's episode, I felt kind of bad for the last guy with the green odor masking spray. I felt like he did a terrible job, but he looked absolutely shell shocked with his slackjaw.

Mark said on twitter he was just ****ing with the guy and had 0 interest in investing in the bacon alarm clock

Does the chick ever invest in anything?

I like the show. I'm intrigued, but I also have my issues.

1. bald guy has to go. there is no way around it. all he does is try to lowball the entrepreneurs and basically try to steal their money and call them pigs while at it. there was one episode where i was completely disgusted and felt bad for the guy doing the nose filtration. they changed their offer from a royalty til equity is covered to perpetual royalty and the poor guy probably didn't even realize that they changed it.

2. half of these people have inflated credentials. some of them are probably much better at finding idiots who are willing to overpay for their companies (oleary, cuban @ internet bubble).

3. i don't quite understand the business of investing in such small companies. they are saying things such as "basing the value of your company on what it's worth now." The base scenario for many of these companies seem to be worth at least 3x the price they dictate in 5 yrs, so are they just applying multiples that would be equivalent to using something like 50% Ke?

of course working in the finance industry really screws with the way i view the show (like anyone else watching a tv show on what they do). i want more substance from the financial perspective but then again i realize that the more i want the more it becomes like my job.

i will most likely continue watching the show or start dragon's den since i do value the perspectives that they throw out as sound bites b/c i get why they're throwing them out. in the episode where the guy was trying to sell a pee club one of the sharks realized the value of the inventory buildup and that he would recover his investment with a profit JUST through selling it.
