I've been trying to learn about the scrap metal business. Do any of you guys have any knowledge or experience with it? I also have this picture here that I wanted to get an opinion about. If this is copper wire how much do you think those rolls are worth?

OP if you are going to go steal some rolls of copper wiring, don't try to make 2p2 your accomplice.

If you really want to make some money, break into a junkyard, preferably one w/o a junkyard dog. Scan first for diesel powered vehicles. Nab the catallytic converter and remove the platinum. Do the same with all non-diesel powered vehicles, except for those you are getting Palladium from the catyllitic converters. Profit.

Insulated copper wire. I was wondering what the scrap value might be.

I was thinking about buying them. I might be able to get a good deal on them.

Seems a waste to scrap that cable, just sell it as it is.

recently I took my scrap copper pieces worth about 30lbs to some place and I got like $3.75/lb. Bunch of scammers.

Well it's more complicated than that. You have the weight of the insulation as a factor. If someone had experience with this type of wire they might be able to give me a rough guideline of the value after the wire is stripped. Or maybe it turns out that this wire shouldn't be stripped at all and should be sold because it's useful and I would get more money that way for it.

I have been using Google to try to find this information and it's been sort of difficult. I was hoping that people who have experience might give a little insight that I can't get from Google.

How much do you think it's worth if you had to give a rough ballpark estimate?

It is probably worth more as wire. You should look for spec numbers on the wire to identify it. Sell the wire = more profit.

op,

Don't know what that wire is worth, but if you want to learn the basics of the international scrap business, this book is really good: https://www.amazon.com/Junkyard-Plan...PZMQZ3YFMEX603

Insulated wire is definitely worth something. You can sell it to a junkyard and they'll sell it to someone in china who will throw it into a giant insulated wire fire to burn off the insulation (like the Springfield tire fire on The Simpsons). Then they collect the remaining copper and sell it to whichever manufacturers are buying copper as a raw material.

So copper wire has different grades based on the thickness of the copper inside the insulation. You can get more for clean copper than you can for insulated wire but it comes down to how long it takes you to strip it. You can't just burn the insulation off because most places wont take burnt copper unless you have a farmers license or I think there is another license/certificate you can have to sell burnt copper. If that is indeed copper wiring and not neoprene or something similar then it is worth a decent amount of money.

Communications wire / multi-core wire

not sure what that is exactly, could be cat-5 or 2in1 or something different. They probably got an alright deal but without knowing the specifics it is hard to say. "Multi-core wire" would lead me to believe that they bought a bunch of **** and probably wont make much off of it.

Should get my buddy bubbles down the way to go haul it away in a shopping cart for you.

In all seriousness though, if you want to learn the business, you can get a job as a scrap metal trader.

+1

There isn't going to be much copper in it and the labor to strip it would be prohibited.

I think homeless people burn the insulation of wires to scrap the copper.
