Could someone answer this of maybe link to a thread of post that provides good advice? I'm from the uk and looking to semi actively invest a proportion of my monthly salary on long and short term buys but I really want to ensure I don't pay the wrong amounts in rake to start with...

Any advice would be appreciated. If its better to stick with a broker the I'm happy to do that but I don't quite undrrstand how quickly I could buy/sell via a broker given my small volume

I haven't read all 6 pages, but is there a spot dedicated to software and charting tools?

As a free method, I'm using a combo of yahoo finance's graphing tools (which are actually not half bad), an android app called candlestix (which is also not half bad), and the basic functionality of stockcharts dot com.

Am I missing out on anything good?

I'm messing around with ninja trader free version. There is market replay tool which is pretty cool (speed up market from 1x to 500x with charting).

Psychology of trading is kinda dry and theoretical. It's more like a medical book than a trading book. Most of the info can be got from Steenbarger's blog too.

I'm not a trader but I found Enhancing trader performance relevant to my poker game. Daily trading coach is similar but is more hands. The 2 complement each other well.

1. Margin of Safety (free pdf online)
2. You can be a stock market genius
3. The Most Important Thing
4. The Int. Investor
5. Security Analysis
6. Distressed Debt Analysis

I have over 50 finance books, maybe 60, and if I could only keep 6 it would be those 6.

Good list. I would include Greenwald's books as well.

I found this the other day: www.buffettfaq.com

It's a 1 page website that is essentially a Q&A of Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger.

Has anyone here read all Buffett shareholder letters? They date back to 1977.

I'm thinking about reading from just before the IT bubble and onwards, as I'm unsure of how relevant the old letters are today's financial climate?

Waiting for the obvious "don't be a lazy idiot - read them all; they are full of gems"-reply ;-)

Here they are:

I've been looking at transitioning out of poker sometime down the road, but I have no business experience whatsoever. The industry that keeps popping up is Real Estate. Anyone have a recommendation for someone that knows nothing about Real Estate? I've never even owned a house, I've only rented. I need a book that teaches the basics about home ownership as well as buying places to rent them out and sell at a profit. I don't mind spending a few dollars either, so if there are several good books to read, or others to pick up after I gain some knowledge, I'd love the suggestions.

Dunno if its been posted before, but i've been using Google Currents on my phone, and it has many interesting subscriptions. One of my favorites, is Quartz (qz.com). It's newly established and is trying to pierce the "digital".
Pros: Constant stream of news, no matter the time. Very specific to my buisness/economics interests. The team consists of many members of prominent news outlets like WSJ, Economist etc.

Worth a look if your tired of reading through the known ones.

Hey thanks for posting this. I didn't know about currents but just had a look and it's exactly what I need. Thanks again.

Hey guys, what books are there that are suitable to accounting with real-life examples, problems, and situations? Something that can be used towards studying for CPA.

I have read them and am glad I did, but I skimmed/skipped some of the detailed descriptions of the annual performance of the individual businesses.

You could certainly start with the more recent ones. The old ones will still be there if you want to read them later.

Anyone know a free trade size calculator that includes commission, risk to reward ratio, % risk of portfolio, stop loss, target?

I have seen many but most don't include commission for some reason.

Get Kaplan's guide if you want to study for the CPA.

Trying to put this in a visible place.

The Wall Street Journal is currently having a deal for $12 for 3 months, which comes out to $1 per week. I have been looking at it for a few weeks and it has always been $26.99 for 3 months.

You get the print newspaper plus the digital access.

When trying to learn options trading, should I read "Options, Futures, and Other Derivatives" before "Option Volatility & Pricing: Advanced Trading Strategies and Techniques", vice versa or the order doesn't really matter?

Any good books that focus on executive compensation? A lot of books and blogs touch on it ("you want executive incentives to be aligned with your own") but I'd enjoy reading something more in-depth.

It really depends on your price range. Becker seems to be the best in terms of easiness to get through and understand the material, but it's also the most expensive. Almost anything else will be less expensive (CPAExcel, Wiley, Roger etc.). Try looking at some of the discussion here: http://www.another71.com/cpa-exam-forum/
