Speaking of behavioral finance, I was recommended Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman at a party the other day. He is one of the pioneers in this field together with Tversky among others apparently. Has anyone read it?

What are some people's views on Nassim Taleb with respect to The Misbehavior of Markets by Benoit Mandelbrot? I read Black Swan and Fooled by Randomness first and thought Taleb was a genius and very original, but now I am reading Misbehavior of Markets and it seems that Taleb is just this rehashed.

Agreed. It gets a bit dull stylistically because its just 450pgs. of "these psychologists did a test like this and learned that...," but the actual content is interesting enough to keep you reading.

Hey everyone

Opinions on "Bloomberg Business Week" magazine?

I've just received an offer on Groupon for a 6 month subscription to "Bloomberg Business Week" magazine for 19 Euros - $24 (this represents about a 50% saving on their best offer on the Bloomberg Europe site)

I am not into investing or trading as many of you seem to be, but I consider myself as a bit of an entrepreneur and enjoy reading about other businesses, industries and CEO's etc

I have skimmed through an online sample and it looks pretty good, but just wanted to get a few 2+2 opinions (the deal ends in 9 hours.....)

TIA

hi, i basically no $h!t about investing a lot of money.

goal : im not searching a 10-20% interest rates, just a good stable return for a long term investment with the possibility of adding a bit more risker investment once i feel im not a noob....

i would like to be able to make a good evaluation of assets, stocks ,etc by my own and need to know what and how to calculate the important variables.

books i think to read but would like your opinion on those.

- The Four Pillars of Investing Lessons for Building a Winning Portfolio by William Bernstein
http://www.amazon.com/Four-Pillars-I...liam+Bernstein

- William J. Bernstein The Investor’s Manifesto.
http://www.amazon.com/Investors-Mani...%92s+Manifesto.

- The Intelligent Asset Allocator: How to Build Your Portfolio to Maximize Returns and Minimize Risk William Bernstein
http://www.amazon.com/Intelligent-As...2+by+Bernstein

those books below seem great but i red they might be a bit too hard to read because they are very dry and closely like a grad book or something ( maybe im wrong and i would gladly be ) ?
im just trying to find a book that is easy to read to start and can bring me a bit of "fun" into a " learning process " , after i might go for deeper reading .

- David F. Swenson Unconventional Success.
http://www.amazon.com/Unconventional...tional+Success.

- The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham
http://www.amazon.com/Intelligent-In...enjamin+Graham

- Security Analysis by Benjamin Graham
http://www.amazon.com/Security-Analy...Warren+Buffett

ty for replying

Didnt read Swenson's book but I can't imagine it would be worth it (for you). Dude is a pioneer, really smart, but so far as I can tell, only with respect to his innovative approach to finding and giving money to people who actually can invest.

Really just cant go wrong starting with Security Analysis/Intelligent Investor.

Anyone know a good read for cfd/spread betting? Had a look on amazon and none of the books had much, if any reviews.

Searching the net I've found out the risks etc but not much more

lol, stay away from this....
cfd are highly -ev do to the fact that they are only tracking the underlying instrument, you are basically betting on an outcome against a "bookie" and are paying a premium to him at every trade

I might give it a miss then, I did understand what was behind cfd. Enjoyed small success on the IG demo and was thinking of taking it further.

if you can beat the market in cfd, you'll have far more success trading the underlying instrument

Yea i guess. I would like to trade over invest currently, guess CFD appealed to the gambler inside and not common sense

Its just a matter of costs. There's nothing special about SB compared to trading shares but it has lots of advantages, tax, tax and tax being the obvious ones but also ease of shorting and the ability to trade small without excessive commission. Dont know about CFDs but for share trading I doubt you can beat SB for value.

but you dont need any specific books, SB prices are very closely tied to the underlying so SB is basically just a method of implementing strategeies that could be impemented without SB. The exception is trying to exploit situations where the SB prices do depart from the underlying but for various reasons that a difficult game.
