If you are looking for a new book on value investing try Value Investing by Greenwald if you haven't read it yet.

Any books on how the small investor can prepare for the depression that could give him thoughts of suicide, when after a major one day 800 point downswing, where their stop-loss orders don't save them because of the institutional investors and they end up in ruins?

Cramer was talking about that very subject just the other day on Squawk Box. How, if the ceiling came falling down, the little guy/gal will get crushed.

Real Estate Investment/Industry Books:

Millionaire Real Estate Investor- Gary Keller

-A look at passive income and wealth creation from a 30,000 ft view. Great as an intro to Real Estate Investment strategy and the case studies are phenominal

Building Wealth One House at a Time- John Schaub
- A deeper look at investing in Single Family Homes specifically

Rich Dad, Poor Dad- Robert Kiyosaki
-Mostly motivational, a great book to get you excited to invest and ingrain the "I can do this" mentality when entering the field.

Biggerpockets
- The best Real Estate forum on the web. Tons of free info.

The Complete Guide to Real Estate Finance for Investment Properties- Steve Berges
-I really can't say enough about this book. Should be mandatory reading for agents (who are notorious for having incorrect numbers). This is the best book for introductory Real Estate finance you can get.

The Kiyosaki stuff is mostly awful.

For finance people, the MBIA book/Ackman short was fantastic.

I haven't read anything from Kiyosaki other than RDPD but investing after reading solely that book would be a terrible idea. The others in the list make up for the complete lack of description on Kiyosaki's part.

That said, the first deal is usually the hardest to pull the trigger on and that book gives you a little shove in the right direction.

What's the title of the book you're referring to? I haven't come across it. I have a huge collection of Real Estate books and I'm always looking for good new ones.

Suggestions for books "similar" to The Black Swan and Fooled by Randomness?

All that Kiyosaki-stuff is pretty much covered in The Richest Man in Babylon.

I think he means:

Confidence Game: How Hedge Fund Manager Bill Ackman Called Wall Street's Bluff (Bloomberg)

Excellent book, similar to "Fooling Some of the People All of the Time"

Some resources I found useful that weren't in the above -

Beginner fixed income: Crescenzi, The Strategic Bond Investor

Advanced macro / fixed income thinker: El-Erian, When Markets Collide

Portfolio management: Swensen, Pioneering Portfolio Management

Beginner to Intermediate FX: DeRosa, Central Banking and Monetary Policy

Best book on financial crisis (intermediate): Dr. Doom, Crisis Economics

Only programming language you need to know: here

Every investor / trader should read: Dalio, Principles

Great thread / resource. Thank you.

I see a lot of finance/investing/economics book recommendations, but not many general business topics recommendations for us non-finance people.

I'm interested in business profiles (I've read a lot about the Bear Stearns/Lehman failures already, but like that type of stuff) and big picture type stuff in the vein of The Black Swan and The Long Tail. Not interested in "rah rah" 4-hour work week type books.

Thanks in advance!

Literally anything by Michael Lewis or Roger Lowenstein. Lowenstein you might really like. Some subjects include pensions' burden on companies, Enron and the tech bubble, and the rise and fall of a hedge fund. His bio of Buffet is pretty good too

Finance major here.

I can't decide between taking Financial Engineering and Institutional Asset Management in the spring. The course listings give very vague descriptions. Any ideas?

Any good recommendations on up to date consumer activities? Blogs, articles, etc. Specifically looking for how different demographics are spending their money right now and the psychology involved within these demographics.
