Red face Opening up a Vanguard account..

I'm a Canadian and I live in Canada. I'm trying to open up an account and it asks if I'm a US Citizen, a resident alien or a non-resident alien.. I don't think I'm any of the above..? I guess I don't have access to Vanguard as long as I am in Canada?

Re: Opening up a Vanguard account..

Looks like if you can hold out a bit https://www.vanguardcanada.ca/portal/ca/en/home.jsp you'll be in luck, sorta.

I would just opt for a regular brokerage account with US exchange access at this time and buy the index funds via their ETFs.

Oh cool.

About the ETF's.. What's the difference between getting those instead of waiting to get the fund directly from vanguard canada when it arrives, besides the trade commission?

(Sorry for the noob Q)

Have you tried to establish your risk tolerance, Goals, and time horizon ? Or are you just planning on dumping money into the market and seeing where it goes ?

The ETF's are a tad less expensive to hold then your typical Investor class fund from Vanguard. But on par with the Admiral class.

I am referring to the Expense Ratio figure.

Yeah I did that. I have a lot of time before me. I don't plan to buy risky actions though, I'll most likely get quite a few of VFINX..

The most important step is getting started, and Vanguard funds like VFINX are a great place to start.

I actually don't have access to the VFINX funds so I'll go for the ETF ones. There's something pretty weird though. I'm looking at the ETF of s&p500 from Vanguard (VOO) vs the actual index and they don't match... The graphs over 2 years are quite different. How could that be?

Nevermind..they match. VOO isn't too old so I was looking at a 1 yearish graph vs a 6 year one =o.

Re: Opening up a Vanguard account..

i know what happened... I was in a recent thread where a canadian was asking where to put 100/month, and used this thread in a search because I remembered seeing vanguardcanada mentioned on this forum a while back. so then I meant to reply to the new thread, but bumped this one since I had it opened in another tab.
Sorry Kgore.
