If you plot the 25 year chart for SPY, I think you'll see that equating this to gambling (aka a game of chance) is a silly thing to say. However if you plot SPY on some random 3-5 year part of the chart, yeah it's going to look gambly. So you already have your first answer to how to make this work to your benefit.
Next choose areas of growth, ETF's with low management fees and good liquidity, and you're starting to get somewhere.
