Question Need comments/critiques for my friends new site

Okay so basically my two best friends had this idea for a website and are trying to bring it to life. The main idea is that someone posts an argument/dispute/question and the general public will vote on who is right, or what the person should do in the given scenario. You will also have the option of commenting on a story to give reason to whatever choice you selected or debate with others. I don't want to explain too much more bc part of what I'm looking for is, if you log on to the site do you understand what is going on.

the site is www.solvemyfight.com

Questions for you guys would be:

-Obviously general observations that you like/dislike
-Is this something that has potential
-Thoughts on user friendliness and general feel to the site (does it seem professional)..would you hire a web developer to bring it to that next level

I am definitely looking for your input bc they have 0 experience in websites so any feedback would help a ton. Feel free to PM me as well. Also if you do develop websites and think you have some sort of better vision let me know and I'd be interested in chatting.

thanks a lot!

Lose the ads. (they make no sense and are an immediate turn off)

Hire a designer. (needs some TLC and clean up although it isnt terrible)

Make up more fights. (need more content to keep a reader/viewer on the site)

Add option to log in from Facebook.

Don't make the users log in to see results. Huge turn off.

Your first "fight" cut off for the "more" only cuts off like 2 lines of text. not really necessary.

Gear the site toward a fun site and not an information collecting site imo

Absolutely. I think you want people to help you solve a dispute with the phone company, no? If not, here’s a quick doodle along the lines of what I would aim for with the header:

Hah funny. First thing I asked was what's the deal w the phone booth. I def like your picture. Do you design websites or just do imaging. I'd definitely be interested in hiring a web developer who thinks they can take it to the next level.

Re: Need comments/critiques for my friends new site

IMO, a web designer is probably not the best initial route to take, unless you happen upon the right one. Not to say that you don’t or won’t need one, but the form really needs to follow the function as far as design goes. The function being to pull visitors to your sight.

My hunch is that the name and tagline won’t perform near as well in that regard as the titles and/or subtitles of the disputes. For example, I think “my gf wants to take a trip with her ex…” will pull more viewers to your site than your company’s name and tagline.

So in lieu of a designer I’d be looking for someone with a broader IM perspective. What you want is someone who understands that if the hook is “my gf wants to take a trip with her ex…” the bait, the dispute, is prominent when prospects reach your site; not your logo or a phone booth. What the name, tagline or logo do more than anything else is let return viewers know they’re at a familiar place. The actual design, aside from userability, helps with familiarity but for first time visitors, that’s not really an issue. What they’re bringing to your site is a degree of interest/curiosity or want of gain and a degree of trust. You only have a second or two to give those two things to your prospect, so whatever they’re hoping to find, you should do everything you can to satisfy.

Their vision is for this site to be the "go to" place to post a debate and get a true solution. By ideally having the internet population chime in with unbiased opinions, hopefully a true right answer surfaces.

So yea obviously there will be people who just want to read gossip or drama filed arguments and pick a side..I don't know if people will be coming specifically to read a specific title but just knowing this site will be giving them an on going easy access way of reading general stories and being able to express their opinions.

If the site is super user friendly and has a clean/fun appeal then I think people will be checking back a lot more than if it were more bloggy or forum like. I think eventually being able to add pictures to stories and maybe some sort of tagging system for other users would be very cool. Categorizing fight types will also help organize and clean it up.

Hi. I lost a rooster 2 weeks ago and now I see my neighbor has one that looks similar only it has a slightly more red neck. should I take the rooster since I think it might be mine or should I try to sue him. thanks
- steal the rooster - sue him

I like the concept. Its nice that most people are unbiased when they vote and so if you have something really common that the general public can relate to then its cool to get input from them.

The design looks fine maybe make the art more relevant, ads are obv zzzz. It seems user friendly. The results should be posted. I don't think its fun to vote and not see the results and/or comments. Registering is a pain and I just don't think people will visit the site frequently enough to register a screen name. Make it less private, no reason not to. Especially if the aim of the site is to gather random input to solve problems.

Without registering a name I can see how crazy posting might get. Perhaps everything needs approval before its posted? This would eliminate any need to register a name imo and should keep the site tidy.

Tbh I don't know how often I would personally visit the site unless, I, myself had some kind of dispute and even then, not sure I would take the results seriously. Although, I originally said almost the same thing about 2+2 and yet I keep visiting daily, ha.

Glgl aaron.

When you create a fight it needs some form of confirmation.

thanks for the input lee! i do think that every fight needs to get approval first before posted which helps prevent spam i guess. But yea itd def be more appealing for a first timer to have access to as much as possible without having to register. I thought you could see results without registering (just not be able to comment), but I def could be wrong about that.

There's an app called thumb that does something similar... users can ask a yes/no question and get the public to vote using thumbs up or thumbs down. Check it out -- its well designed, easy to use, and they have a ton of people on it. I think you could learn a bunch by looking at what they've done and figuring out what you like and what you don't like.
